The US wasn't a problem when I was there for 5 weeks in June. You DON'T need a VISA if you have a machine readable passport. You complete a VISA waiver form on the plane and simply hand it in to immgration. It entitles you to stay 90 days without working. I was through immigration in 10mins.
There's random baggage checks and you may be frisked (that may appeal to you). Security wasn't any big deal and I went through 4 airports in a single day.

I have a speeding conviction. It would depend on what type of criminal record we're talking about. I'd say stuff like serious traffic convictions, fraud, ABH, GBH, drugs, etc.. would be a big no no.

The US border protection isn't that tough. They scan your passport, check you match the photo, take your pic and finger print and wave you on your way. I'd heard of folk getting grief going through immigration, but I can honestly say it was as easy as going anywhere in Europe and going through British immigration returning home.
Most to$$ers get grief because they either don't do what they're told or can't complete a feckin form properly. You get handed the form well over an hour before you land yet some plonkers get to the immigration desk with it filled in. No wonder the officers get pi$$ed off.

SS - I am a regular visitor to Florida and as far as I remember you should be fine - Unless you are a kiddie fiddler !! I believe the phrase the use is "Guilty of moral turpitude" Which nicking a few bits from a shop / driving bad doesn't count as !
Just say NO - Or you could find yourself on the wrong end of a VERY personal search on arrival in Fla.
