If I could have found a P1 which had been ECUTecked, had clear lenses, the Prodrive Alcons, a Blitz NUR Spec R Exhaust, an induction kit, 18 inch wheels, a decat, a forge recirc dump valve, Defi gauges re oil temp, oil pressure, zorst gas temp, boost pressure and fuel pressure, with an integrated knock link in the instrument cowling, and with a lighter fly wheel and pulleys, and an AP organic clutch - then I probably would have just bought that and have had done...

Actually, I wish I'd just bought an STI5 RA in silver and saved about 5K... B*gger....

I suppose, on a semi serious note, I get cheap thrills (not that bl*ody cheap on reflection) in improving something, and I get hooked and addicted on making it EVEN better with the next mod... Pete, this I accept is something I do need to get over, as it's difficult to draw the line (apart from if I ever managed to do everything under the sun and the only remaining option was to fit lexus rear lights - big fat no to them!).

Pete, why did you buy a car you werent happy with?

After all, why buy a car that will rev to 7200 (as set by the manufacturers) and only rev it occasionaly beyond 3000 revs?

Why buy a car that has a turbo, when you never get the turbo spooling up?

Why buy a car with good brakes, and not use the things?

Silly question you posted really, you could have bought a justy, saved yourself thousands (probably more than those you criticise, spend on modify), and still had a car that could perform the same as the subaru you own!

^^^ exactly what i was thinking.

and bubba..i had no knocking from my engine matey..even with 70k under its belt. full exhaust system..sweet as a nut and no trips to kwik fit since either

lets all buy a flat four and keep it manacled with a farty peashooter backbox. bollox to that..i like to annoy my neighbours.

for someone with 30,000 posts ..it's not encouraging for newbies to see that senior members can still be pretentious arseholes.

Noobscoob, with all due respect - ie zero, what was pretentiously arseholey about my post? And with a few posts under YOUR belt, you might come to appreciate that I'm seldom deadly serious with my comments.

Lest we not forget that Pete *nearly* became "one of us", when he looked at changing his exhaust

Once again, the wind-up is on the go

I'll enjoy this one - like all of Pete's posts, they should be taken with a great quantity of salt

Why modify a scooby?

Because they are crap

Modifying them just gives the owner an excuse to justify that it isn't

Why spend money on modifying my scoob?

Because it keeps me out of trouble and its better then spending loads of money on drugs, and cheap hookers.

I totally agree with you, i could not of put it better my self.

Why modify a Nova, so that it is quicker than a cossie for instance. Theres no point! and you know what a nova is...its a nova bicycle.

So many times I see people modify their cars and then spend £1,000's putting right the damage and long tern unreliability!!

I don't know - why buy a car that isn't what you want??

And then spend £1,000's modifying it and more money putting it right and then losing £1,000's come re-sale time???

ITS MADNESS!!

BUY A CAR THAT YOU WANT AND STOP SELLING YOURSELVES SHORT FFS!!!

hummmmm lets see my car cost me just 7500 2 years ago for 275bhp (sti 2) and ive spent about £4000 on it, so thats £11500 for a 340 ish bhp car with uprated brakes and suspention.

could u imagine what would happen if i got meself somthing else that had similar power.
for a start it would have to be another 5 years older with rare parts that aint cheep.
(an old 911 etc)

u see i just dont need to worry about anything going pop because the parts are easy to get hold of and on the cheep side.

that my friends...... is why the subaru impreza is my car of choice.

and if u dont like it tough ****, im ere to stay

Because... some people have individuality and like to be a bit different - who wants to spend an hour wandering around a car park trying to find your car because its the same as every other one in there ?

And, it depends what the mods are - the standard stereo is crap, so putting a decent CD player in and changing the stock speakers means your music will sound much better if thats what you like when you're driving.

The factory exhaust is only on there to pass emissions laws - it makes a distinctive engine sound like a a bee in a jam jar - the standard brakes arent great etc...

Car makers dont turn out 'perfect' cars from the factory - they make them as cheap as they can, so lots of things are compromised - 'modding' can be as simple as putting parts on that are what the original designers WOULD have put on, had they been given free reign by the factory.

Making an already good car better and more suited to your needs / driving style means you get closer to the 'ideal car'

Or is this all too sensible ? maybe I should just slag PSL off for being a stirring troll - bet he gleefully checks the site every half hour to see what controversy he's stirred up.

Personally I reckon hes in the 'special' ward and they just let him on the web to keep him quiet - "Of course you own a Subaru Mr Lewis, now just swallow this and have a nice sleep"

Can't believe this post is being dignified with replies, Pete is a know nothing comedian. He claims his Impreza Turbo Wagon does 40mpg FFS. He puts punctuation (comma oil) in his nonexistent car , and has a cocklink wrapped around his left nut. So just read and laugh.

So? You modify to be individual, do you???

What? you mean like every bloody council house chavvie pikey out there??

Lets look at it sensibly .... I am, in fact, original - BY LEAVING IT STANDARD!!!

All you modifying chavs are doing is COPYING EVERYONE ELSE!!

How UTTERLY boring and sheep like!!

So, go your own way, be original, be wise, be clever and do NOT modify!!

Pete, against my better judgement I am going to feed the troll.
Do you decorate your house, or is it the way the manufacturer made it all those years ago?

You modified it when you stuck Mizola in it instead of the recommended Subaru stuff Pete. Your fuel consumption is so non-standard it's the modding equivalent of producing 1000BHP.

I agree to a certain extent Pete

Stuff like Dump valves, big Backboxes, induction kits are just as bad as Halfords stick on spoilers....a lot of this s**t looks great but isn't proven.

Modifying your car is fine but beyond a certain extent you ae better off moving on to something which is better equipped as standard.

I'm loving it! I modified my car because when it came out the factory it had inherent comprimises (even though it's an RA lol).

For example, the suspension is 90% performance orientated but 10% comfort. I feel I can lose that comfort because it doesn't interest me. Again, the engine is engineered to last as long as Pete's but I'd rather go faster. As Eldon Tyrell said "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long."

So there.
