I was born in the UK and my birth certificate only says Andrew Tang.

No fancy Chinese names, but my siblings do have Chinese names as middle names, as does my daughter.

I got my name because when my dad was talking to a customer in the restaurant, the Scottish customer told him to call me Andrew if I was a boy!

1.Not necessorily that people are ashamed of their real Asian names or sumthing but British people do have problem speaking Asian names. So,its easier to have a British nickname for British people's convenience.

2.Secondly,some of the British born Asians feel more fitted in with the British society I suppose for very similar reason stated in No.1 reason.

Both reasons are valid and not a laughing stock.BTW,my name is Swati and some of my Welsh friends had prob speaking it so they call me "Fred"
Now I havent adapted it but I got given this name by Tom Rosedale and his missus.
I just call both of them mr and mrs Dunda-heads and they love it

Moses, my son's nickname( my mother gave him this name in India; it wasnt given for any British convenience)is Momo.My British family call him Mo.

His real name is Kanishk. His mates call him kay.He got given this name.he'd rather be called Kanishk.

Lets face it British are lazy. They cant be bothered speaking a mouthful and like shorthening everyone's names.

PS- BTW, we arent shop keepers
I have a friend by the name of Subhash, since a crowd of us all went to college years ago, he became known as "Bash". It was nothing to do with being lazy at all it was purely meant (not gay) affectionatly. Hes a top bloke and has been called "Bash" now for the last 7 years by everyone, including his family. He does not object one bit.

For me if someone shortens your name or gives you a good nickname, it is a sign that like you.

Not including words like Paki etc

I work with lots of chinese based software engineers and most of them pick a western sounding name to use, for example my mate Yat-Lung calls himself Alan.

I guess it's partly so people can pronounce their names easier. I have lots of friends in Slovakia, they have problems pronouncing the 'w' in my name correctly as it just doesn't work in their language - so they just call me Boris over there.

No idea why.

LOL at that. It's the ones that are quintessentially English like Colin or Trevor or Fred that make me smile, because I can't imagine there being an Indian/Chinese/Pakistani name remotely close to them, and the names are so prosaic anyway.

Years ago, when I was at school we did a trip to Durham Cathedral. We all piled down to the town for lunch and were sat outside a general store, written above the door, proprietor Sakhi Sultannas (or something very close)

Had us in hysterics, guessing he was married to Pakheti Crisps, had kids, Tinni Beeans and Channi Pop, his father Baga Mixednhuts and his Mother Chartona Jouise.

We were easily pleased back then

Many of British names make me laugh e.g. D!ck as well!
Like Mary Jane and many more................
Some are so common, prosaic whatever you wanna call them. There are 5000 Tom Jones in just North of Wales FGS!
