It is coefficient drag that plays a key role at that pace, in addition peak power will assist in extracting that last few MPH.
As has been said, how unrealistic is it really ? I have had my standard Volvo T5 to 155 on the speedo, then had it mapped and it went off at 160 and added 2-3 mph. So a speedo claim of 175 or whatever is a realistic 155-160.
Nothing strange there ?

Haven't watch the vid as I'm behind works firewall but.....
It is possible, the Octavia is based on the Golf and Jon's (TaviaRS) old car did a genuine 161mph with 240bhp at Brunters.
The Octavia is based on the Golf platform but is slightly more aerodynamic. The Golf won't suffer big 4X4 losses as I'm sure the R32 uses the Haldex centre diff so will be FWD until the front wheels start to spin.
So if he's getting close to a genuine 160 and add in speedo error and bigger wheels then a speedo reading of 175 is believable with a 10% overread.
Cheers

Speedo inaccuracy would play alot in the speeds shown, but only about 5% [9mph] sp 160'ish is achievable. If you look at the rev counter he was stuck on 7+, no power in engine to push any further due to massive amount of drag [would just about rip yer eards off if you stuck your head out for a lung full]
With the mods he would push out more than 240, would suggest what though

Why do you not just believe the guy? Why should he lie? Are you all a little envious? That he has the car and the bottle to do it.

If he was using bigger wheels, then he would actually be travelling FASTER than his speedo suggests.
I am sorry, but I believe this video to be fake, have a look near the end of the video when he overtakes another car, he must be going say 30mph faster than that car, meaning that car must be also doing 130mph plus.
One way he could fake it ,would be an import, and to put mph speed dials in an import car.

I believe the video. Some here have said that it might be KPH, but it's not as you can see the KPH figures written on the 'inside' circle of the speedo when the camera zooms in close.
Also, the slow climb up to the maximum speed indicates it is the top speed being reached.
Take into account the possible inaccuracy of the speedo and I see no reason for it to be fake.

While indicated 170mph: 287.9 miles the odometer after 1:23; 289.3 miles after 1m54. Therefore 1.4 miles in 31s, approximates to 162mph. Therefore the odometer is consistent with the speedo, which is only guaranteed to 10% (not 5%) by law.
I've had my Scoob (255bhp MY00 PPP) up to 150mph and it was still pulling hard, and indicating 160mph on the speedo. Therefore all this points to the R32, with lower rolling resistance and a decent induction system and engine mapping, being able to hit about 160mph (indicated 170-175mph).
It's true that the overtaking in the end would mean that the other guy was doing 120-130mph, but judging by the green roadsign and use of the phrase "5-0" to mean the police, I reckon this was done in the US, in one of the de-restricted states, e.g. Montana.
All in, I reckon it's genuine - not 175mph, but maybe 160-165mph, yes...
(ps I chickened out with mine at 150mph! And it was on a German Autobahn so I could have gone faster if I wanted to...)

Looks genuine to me...
* The speedo will be over reading quite a bit - I remember with the Focus RS it over read by about 7% meaning people were getting readings of around 157mph top end.
* He's done a bit of work so it's fair to assume that he has more than 240bhp.
* If the R32 speedo also over read by 7% he'd only have to be doing 164 to see 175 on the clock. At 10% it would only have to be 159mph.

No, aaquil, you won't get better performance by turning the ESP off . More likely he either didn't want the system coming in at very high speeds (not sure why), or he's changed something else on the car that makes it incompatible with the ESP system, or he's just showing off...

Looks like he's pretty close to the limiter in top gear there, anyone know what the Golf R32 is actually geared to do??
Nice engine note!!

Its shot in the USA by the looks, LHD in MPH but their Miles are shorter than ours by about 100 yards? id have to look it up but there is a difference, plus you have speedo inacurraces to contend with, probably about 158-160mph rather than 170+mph

Not sure if its any difference on land, but you may be right.. And Id agree
its doing about 160mph (10% from 175)

cant see anything wrong with that vid...traction control is defo off with the light on...vid looks to be usa so the speedo will be mph. having had several golf, including a mk4 which the one in the vid was and also a mk3 vr6 which i saw 140 in, i can well believe that speed. obviously highly modded.

162 mph shown doing 155 mph
Speedo accuracy is very debatable. Here is a vid of my car showing 260kmh on an Autobahn near Munich ( http://media.putfile.com/Autobahn ) and it will go a bit further to about 265 before the limiter cuts in... its speed limited to 248kmh or 155mph.. other things you notice are the annoying whistle from the rhs window (Subaru build quality) and the speed difference as you overtake buses and caravans. Its not safe even where its legal on dual carriageway
Still I've always thought there must be room for a little tuning in the R32 with a 3.2 V6...
