mk3 16v - had one and loved it. The 8v is a nice car for a commute, but you'll get mauled by a VTR. As for making money on it - nope, people pay for the 3 letters? Not likely, and this is why you have found this "bargain".... if someone has to drop it to £1k to shift it, liklihood is that you'll not manage to sell it for more.
TBH, a Polo 1.4 is as quick as an 8v GTI, and a lot cheaper to run & insure!
Still, I love the Mk3 Golf - had a 16v GTI and a VR6 and still think they look fantastic

Had a Mk2 and it was fantastic, but bear in mind most have gone past 150k and nead tlc, although parts can be dirt cheap and it is easy to work on. The Mk3 was overweight and bodywork was not in the same league, the reason I stopped having vw. Saying that they are not a bad car but not high on fun, if a mk3 is what you want you would be better off with the tdi

2 - There are still plenty of good Mk2's out there you just have to be prepared to look at a few
3 - I've worked on a few Mk2's and 3's, the Mk2 is by far the better built car. VW, along with most other German manufacturers (early E36 BM anyone?) were having big build quality issues at that time, mainly as a result of cost cutting excercises going to far
4 - As Paul has said the Mk3 is a overweight underpowered, wallowy dog, any Mk2 will wipe the floor with it's Mk3 equivalent on economy, reliability, ride, handling and comfort.
PS: For the record, my wife's std Mk2 1.6 Driver will kick a std Mk3 8v GTi's *** on anything other than a Motorway

Just my thoughts for what its worth!
A few weeks ago, I went to see and drive a 97 MK3 8v GTI, as I was selling the Scoob. What a complete pile of crap! Wouldnt pull the skin off a rice puddin! Didnt feel like it would handle, and was starting to rust all over the show, and this was MEANT to be in great condition. It felt REALLY old compared to the Scoob, even though it was 2 years older. Group 14 insurance for these cars is a joke IMO. Go for the Saxo, at least it will feel more modern.

I wouldnt get in a saxo if you paid me!!! It seems to be the law that you have lexus-lights, alloy tax disc holder, and you MUST be insured under your dads name. No way do i need people thinking that of me.
