OK - could have done more to have prevented the situation arising, if you prefer.

or withough due care and attention
As I said, the mention of 3rd gear when you view is obscured could call that in to question if anything had happned.

and i wasnt speeding...this guy didnt peek around the van, he literally strode stright out into the road with 2 kids in tow...had i been going any faster in fact, they wouldve been behind me, so its arguable that it was because i was going so slowly that i almost hit them...
As a matter of interest did you check to see if there was a fault with the crossing lights, maybe the wrong colour being displayed for the pedestrians or nothing at all? Just a thought?!

i have done some silly things on the road in the past that have had me kicking myself, but this wasnt one of them and if youre driving is so perfect ollyk, then i bow to your magnificence...
I don't claim to be anything like perfect, I've already stated that and I'll happily state it again. I have passed the IAM test and to do have C+E as well as car licence. Both of those were eye openers and made me aware of many things that I wasn't aware of as a car driver, I hope they have both made me a better driver but I doubt I'd come close to a Police Grade 1 driver never mind perfection.

You said you had learnt from the experience, I'm glad, that's what life is all about, learning from experiences - what's patronising about that?

Sure - it's easy to jump to a lot of conclusions when you only have one side of a story. We just don't know what motivated the pedestrian to step out.

Olly - Can you get a sticker made up for your boot with your name on it.

That way If I'm behind you and come across a Green light I'll know to slow down - Save me rear-ending you

I can help you in an even wider context, look on the back of car sometime, a couple of feet up from the ground towards the sides. You'll see some red plastic, if these light up on a car you are following, you may want to slow down

Haven't you disconnected them yet? You'd be surprised at the amount of petrol you use lighting those brake lights in a year. I also don't bother with headlights, I find it works just as well to just find someone else going your way and follow their tail lights

I can only see those bits if the car infront speeds up too fast - normally my bonnet oscures everything from the top off the car in front's boot lid down .

When Driving I always assume that everybody around me is trying to lose me my licence in whatever way they can manage

Use your hand brake more - saves wear on the foot brake and saves you having to disconnect the bulbs

Just be thankful you didn't hit them - Insurance nightmare running over pedestrians - and this was 22 years ago - I'm sure things wont have improved !!

No claims bonus "suspended" for 6 years even though no claim was ever made against me (apparently the could have claimed within 6 years)

I always fancied having an emergency brake. I remember the old footage when they were looking in to safety mechanisms, mostly for motorways and one idea was fire and anchor in to the road with an explosive charge. The cable was then attached to your rear axel to ensure you stopped quickly in case of an emergency. It worked very well for stopping the back axel, shame it didn't stop the rest of the car with it

Dunno, was thinking of adjusting the design slightly to deal with tail gaters and pin their front axel to the road
