But I suppose they would be after attending one of the Uk's top state run colleges - 1st place whilst I was there IIRC <gloats>
Oh, and my A-levels are worthless too

Being the second year of GCSEs (1989), it did seem there was a big gap when starting A levels, and I believe I worked harder in the first term of 6th form to bridge that gap and get back on top of Maths and Physics then I did at any other stage for those subjects - including leading up to the exams themselves.
As we were second year of GCSE, we did do some past O level papers too. I think that if you could think academically, do OK in exams and had a good short-term memory (for cramming) the O levels were not harder. If you weren't so "academic", and/or not so hot with the short term memory, you'd get better marks in GCSEs than you would in O levels. Therefore, I'd say they were different rather than harder.
I'd say good results definitely help with getting into university, and/or with getting your first job (noting many graduates get a conditional job offer before their degree result is announced). Once you've been working a few years, it's what you've done at work that counts much more than what you did at school.
PS Am far too modest than to quote my results and show up everyone else.

I was the first year to do GCSE, I remember coming out of my Design Tec exam and my teacher said "did you understand all of that" to which we said "not really" and she said "no, neither did I" and walked off laughing - actually got a B in that though.
I got 2 B's, 2 C's and 3 D's, plus 2 typing qualifications - I wanted to start earning asap when I left at 16 so did a YTS and got an NVQ4 at the end of it.
As said above, I've never had to prove what qualifications I've got to get a job though

Thinking about it, I have had to show the degree certificate recently to a prospective employer recently (and that's ~11 years after I got it). Whether they'd have asked for A level certificates if I hadn't got a degree, I have no idea.

I thought usually they just phoned or wrote to the university in question to confirm you'd been awarded the degree. Would be a PITA if I had to get both of mine out of the frames

The rules changed some time ago - when I was a lad the top 5% each year gt an A, then next 20% a B and so on
Now, if you get 70/100 you get an A - so everyone could get an A
So the exam boards no longer rank your result vs. the rest of the year
All this means that Universities are having to introduce their own entrance exams to be able to find the good students
Also saw the item on current A graders sitting 'real' papers and their P1ss poor results.
