You can get a good one for 10k and meets all your criteria. RWD = proper driving
Agree with the ATR though

I know what you mean about the DC2 and I still hanker after one!
When I got my first Impreza it was a choice between a MY97 or a DC2. When I bought the next two Imprezas the DC2 was still in the back of my mind. I even tried to convice my wife it would a sensible family car, but I got a Forester instead!
Even if I hate after a bit, I have to get one just get the DC2 thing out of my system!
In a choice between the ATR and the ITR, I still lean towards the ITR.

I just tried that with the DC5 but she wasnt having it, I think the red Recaro's put her off, and she hates white cars (I know there are other colours but white is best for the ITR).

Right after much pondering, research, head scratching, looking at other cars, more pondering, I think I've narrowed it down to:
heart says: 1999/2000 Audi S3 approx £10k
head says: 2000/2001 VW Golf TDI approx £8-10k (130 or 150bhp)
I'm checking on the insurance for an Audi and if that's not affordable, then it will be VAG TDI!

over that sort of journey you'll get ~25-30mpg on the clk 230k, but it is a struggle to get it to stay over 28ish.
i average 25/26 in the long term.
they are cracking cars though, can't fault mine at all really.

A T or V reg Nissan Primera GT
Very good handling
Reasonably quick - 130mph 0-100 same as a Saxo VTS/ Golf TDi 130
Very Economical for 150bhp - got over 39 mpg on motorway cruise to Cornwall ( computer said 42mpg )
Electric Sun roof
Air Con
Seats 4 easily
Large boot if you have hatchback - 4 door version is compromised by the semi bulkhead
No cambelt worries - it's a chain
Good engine
You would get a minter for well under 5k on a V-plate
Sort of budget price Accord Type-R in looks and handling

Andy, Hi again
Im doing 60 miles a day, similar roads I guess.
I bought a Golf GTtdi (110 only!)
I do 50 mpg even when my foot is glued to the floor(and I mean that) so 550 miles or so from 50 quid.
Its my first diesel, Im left thinking - this is damn good and I wish Id got the pd150..........seriously, get a pd 150, get some springs to stiffen it up a bit and if you want a remap to 190bhp - honest to god a rocket ship and still damn nearly 50mpg - I cant fault the thing - it has all the toys, is classy, girls like it(they just do its a golf ok!)
