Lateral 567bhp Scoob 0-60 3 seconds (est)
Lateral 567bhp Scoob 0-132 10.9 seconds
Lateral 567bhp scoob 60-132 7.9 seconds

425bhp Astra 0-60 4 seconds (est)
425bhp Astra 0-130 12 seconds (est)
425bhp Astra 60-130 8 seconds (est)

Hmmm, not quite with you on the Quicker bit, but once rolling, maybe on a par, but not quicker. Given the weight advantage, and power involved, i could believe that.

Mikees 502bhp Scoob 0-60 2.8 seconds (est @ best)
Mikees 502bhp Scoob 0-132 10.8 seconds
Mikees 502bhp scoob 60-132 8 seconds

Speaking of Astras, anyone remember John Welch? He won the European RallyCross championship in a mk 2 astra I think? Was 650-700bhp though! Was back in the days of RS200s and 6R4s etc. If I remember rightly it was a space frame though

P20SPD, how can you say that (going on your figures) 7.9 from 60-132 isnt comparable with 8.0 from 60-130?

But anyway TBH i dont think that the astra has ever done a sub 5 second 0-60, its TERRIBLE off the line, even on the stickiest tyres Rob uses the best ever 60ft is a terribley shocking 2.2 seconds!

So I think the figures are more like:
Lateral 567bhp Scoob 0-60 3 seconds (est)
Lateral 567bhp Scoob 0-132 10.9 seconds
Lateral 567bhp scoob 60-132 7.9 seconds

425bhp Astra 0-60 5 seconds (est)
425bhp Astra 0-130 12 seconds (est)
425bhp Astra 60-130 7 seconds (est)

But either way it doesnt really matter as whatever happens you are talking only a fraction of a second difference in there acceleration from 60-130 realistically

So once again im going to stick to my belief that a scooby needs somewhere between 500-600bhp to match the performance of robs car at the moment, possibly its a little closer to the bottom end of that than i give it credit for cause im too used to all the bull**** power figures ive seen quoted against some very average performing scooby's as scooby owners seem to be quite bad for claiming 400bhp when they have probably (based on the figures you have said) actually had less than 350bhp!

some of the rally cross cars are truely mental, i have a feeling they wouldnt prove road reliable though, so not really a fair comparison against road going scoobies etc.

Can anyone else see the irony in there being an argument on a scooby forum about wether an astra does 0-60 in 4 seconds or over 5 seconds, and its the scooby owner arguing it does 4 seconds and the astra owner arguing it does it in over 5 :P

May i suggest you find a private bit of road (that off road bit of track called the M5 for example) and both sit at 60mph alongside each other on it.

Then when you go under a bridge over the road, you both nail it as you get underneath it, and see which one hits 120mph first, and more importantly by how much.

I am going to be very surprised if there is much in it either way (unless rob forgets to fill up with nitrous or petrol or something stupid like that, lol)

Is the owner of the Astra around for comment?

If the chap's car is designed for the drag strip, then well played and good luck. If we're talking Castle Coombe or the Tavistock to Oakhampton run (he'll know were I mean) then I would be interested to say how well it would cope.

This, for me, is all good banter - and although I don't know the guy personally (just the car) I've been told he's nice chap and would like to meet him.

Given this, Me and Carl Sorrenson http://www.sorensenroadsport.co.uk/ would like to an extend an invite to an upcoming Dartmoor skirmish (on private roads). My RA (heavily modded), Carl's STI9 (standard at the moment) and a dozen plus Skylines, Evos and the odd GT4 will be out to play. It'll be a good giggle and will give us all an idea of how well the Astra fairs against this type of machinery in the real world. Not really a fair comparison I guess as most of the cars there will have luxuries such as glass windows and an FM radio - so they won't be proper racing cars like the Astra.

Just to confirm, the Astra is used as a daily driver isn't it? That's commitment!

The car belongs to rob (sbd16v who is posting above)
Its very much intended for the likes of castlecoombe but isnt currently ready for it (suspension should be here in a few weeks hopefully) im sure if you wait till then he will be up for a bit of a blast, but TBH i dont see that a drive down a load of b roads will prove anything more than who is the most risk taking driver, visibility is the limit far more than cornering ability in such conditions in my experience, especially on roads you dont know.

A trackday at castle coombe would be a far better comparison IMHO than expecting Rob to compete with people on roads they know and he doesnt and with no regard for the public who might be coming the other way, very different kettle of fish to racing on a dual carriageway IMHO

But once again, no one has ever said that an open diff astra (he has one but the quaiffe isnt fitted yet) will pull out of a tight corner matching a scooby, thats never been mentioned once and never would be by either of us, all we have said all along is it will compete on a par with a big pwoer scooby in a straight line from a rolling start, thats the only claim ever made or that i feel we need to back up.

PS

yes its his daily driver, in fact its the ONLY road legal car he has at the moment, has been for a quite a while!

It will come off the road for winter thought probably, its not really suited to wet roads, and neither of us would ever claim it was.

Mines not running 500bhp at the moment, and didn't want to imply that it did. Hence the deletion.

I fcukin love this stuff - it's all good fun. I am completely up for a bit of testing, just in the name science.

I'm a petrol head first and foremost and an Impreza happens to be my chosen weapon at the moment. If we go out and the Astra does the business I will be completely objective in feeding that back.

I will be at Castle Coombe on the 16th September and again on the 4th October. This would be the sensible place to compare cars.

A lap time ought to do it.

PM Me for a link up.

Cheers

Im sure Rob will be up for the 4th if his suspension has arrived by then.

Im the same as you mate, just a petrol head, ive currently got an intergra type R, a cossie, a nova, a couple of minis and an alfa romeo, im interested in anything quick and im not especially pro astras, wouldnt ever really want one myself in fact!

Ps

Lap time at coombe though (despite being good fun) will do NOTHING to prove one way or the other any of the claims we made and if its slower it could be due to corner speeds not the straights.

Although ultimately once finished the astra should be pretty good on track, the suspension hasnt in anyway even been started on from that respect yet.

60-120mph.

I'd be up for that as well. I don't expect to be competitive but would like to know how far behind I was.

Perfect mate, TBH even if your scooby is only 400bhp, when Rob beats it it will still do him a big favour in shutting up loads of people who dont even think he can beat a relatively modest car like that even!

I have to ask,

Where's the skill in driving a car quickly in straight line? You see, if I asked my dear old Mum to sit in the Astra and accelerate gently upto 50 in fith and then floor the throttle, she could. I'm not quite sure what it has to do with driving ability, or the ability of the car to do things like go around corners well. Even driving to work in a car with perspex windows and no radio must be, if you'll excuse the pun, a bit of a drag.

Still, horses for courses and who am I/we to judge?

It doesnt prove anything of the sort mate, and neither did Rob or myself ever claim it would, all it proves is that the car is quick.

Rob isnt too bad a driver although i reckon if you lent both me and him your car and pointed us at castle coombe i would probably beat him round there, due to more experience of your sort of car and more experience of coombe, but at no point has rob made any claims about driver skill or his cars ability to corner.

He WILL sort the cornering, that is important to him as he likes track days, but he hasnt yet, its average at best IMHO currently (in fact i had a lovely spin in it at coombe last time i drove it in the wet, lol)

Please bare in mind JTaylor, that rob did not join this site and start posting

"my astra will kill all scoobies, its the best cornering car in the world"

He joined this site to defend his car after someone tried to rubbish his claims it could match a 500bhp 4wd car from a rolling start on a totally different website!

You cant calculate 60-130mph (for example) by deducting the 0-60mph time from the 0-130mph time.

PS

If you ask Rob nicely he might let you have a drive of the astra, and you will see that there actually IS some skill needed to keep the horrible ****ing thing in a straight line at 50mph, thats why its 0-60 times are so ****
