Obviously I don't know where you live.....but is it really the case there is no nursery near to you, and no route from home to work other than a dual carriageway?

If I drive the 11 miles to work, I use a dual carriageway. If I cycle the 11 miles to work, I don't.

Nursery at work, but don't use it. Use one near house.

for the n'th time by taxing aviation fuel. This is doing plenty of harm to the environment, and people really do make a choice to go on holiday! Surprised nobody is concentrating on it - no the 'evil' motor car gets all the attention. Or they could tax alcohol higher and hence tackle binge drinking. There is an endless list of things they could tax higher.

I completely agree re the harm of aviation fuel.

Unfortunately, this is not quite so "simple" either, must as I wish it could be.
It needs worldwide agreement on taxing aviation fuel, otherwise no-one would fly into the UK and refuel. Everyone would refuel in countries where fuel is untaxed. Other countries with less morals would then take advantage.

Alcohol higher? Yep, why not. Sadly, prices would have to skyrocket to cover the deficit left by a fuel duty reduction.

Taxation is a balance. No one person will ever be happy with the way it is done.

It's easy to grumble, but there are a hell of a lot of public services & facilities in place that one doesn't even think about.

Yes, easy to pick on social services or welfare state as one you don't agree with, and easy to forget about the services you use every day and don't think about - they all have to be paid for somehow.

I respect your view but can't see how it can be argued that 60% plus tax on anything is reasonable. I would argue that the government should be wasting less quite frankly on various things that I couldn't care less about, but then we could debate fiscal policy and taxation for an eternity I imagine. It will interesting to see what happens over the next few months. If nobody bothers to protest then your point will be proved.

Wine - anything up to 60% tax.
**** - 85% tax.

If you drink £3 wine, £1.19 of it is duty, and 52.5p of it is VAT....which makes £1.72 of your £3 wine as tax (nearly 60%).

Part of living in a free democracy is the goverment spending money on things "you couldn't care less about". I'm sure there's plenty who "couldn't care less about your car usage"
