If the fuel company wants to make an additional 1p, the price has to go up by 1.175p. ie, only 0.175p of tax.
Your 4p is just totally & utterly wrong.
It'd be worth your while understanding how taxation works on fuel.

I dont mind paying taxes as long as they are at reasonable levels-surely they could put a cap on it.

Well then don't support actions that are short on wit and ignorant of the F-A-C-T-S

3) XYZ country gets it cheaper, so why can't we.
None of which really address how the deficit is funded IF fuel duty is reduced.
Don't worry about the odd few people who object to the idea - I guarantee you 90% of people are behind a protest. Nice one again and catch up on this shortly.
For starters, anyone with any understanding of world events know that this is not a UK taxation issue. Fuel duty has not changed to cause these prices.
Most also understand taxation and worry that the country currently has a £33bn taxation deficit (just for this year).
So the chancellor has no leeway to glibly reduce taxes....and the country cannot go on with a £33bn deficit year on year....so how do you think that will be addressed???? There's absolutely ZERO chance that the £ in your pocket will go further for starters......and while there may be a small reduction in fuel duty for political positioning...I can GUARANTEE that the deficit will be made up in another way, which will affect your outgoings (be it VAT, income tax, or NI).
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE understand & appreciate the economics of running a country....

So, you see, it's NOT "X times higher".

Our roads are not good. We are relieved of Sixty pounds for doing 35 in a thirty zone. Enthusiasts are portrayed as crazed killers.
There was spate of burglaries in my street last week and yet I have not seen one bobby stroll pass my window. Today, however, I did see four policeman in two virtually unmarked vans on a 40 mph dual carriageway sneakily zapping people doing 45mph.
Tax, tax, stealth tax, fines, tax, being asked to pay for Childline, RLBI, Air Ambulance, Tax. I call it a ******* stitch up. I know for a fact there are young girls who deliberately get pregnant to take advantage of the support that we pay for. I see chav's collecting there doll cheque and spending it on Lambart and Butlers, White lightning and Mitsi's (wicked man).
So, when I'm asked to pay 80% tax on fuel I say "what's in for me, my family, my friends and my kin?"
The most dis-heartening thing of all however is that 1 million people marched in protest against a war that nobody wanted but that did not stop a war that cost me and you £5,000,000,000.
The protest should be along the lines of "where does the 80% go?" or "can we have some of it please?".

When it was 70p/litre, you were paying over 80% tax....
So you see, you're better off now

At 80p/litre, the total taxation is around 75%.
At 100p/litre, it reduces to 63% because of fuel duty being a fixed amount.
I'll link in my table....

No problem easyrider.
The trouble with this sort of thing is that people can get caught up on a bandwagon, and information goes flying around everywhere, with people believing whatever they read WITHOUT checking out the facts for themselves.
I personally like to do my own research on these things. The information is all available on websites like here http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/.

Yup, can't agree with you more on that point. If you look too long and hard at the human race/situation it makes for grim reading,we live in the lap of luxury while people starve to death while our 'human nature' makes [most of] us say "so what"
We've got a lot of evolving left to do,we're only just 'out of the trees',our hands are still designed/evolved to grip branches FFS , anyway i digress, running a country i so ,so,so,difficult that's why no country has got it right yet , humans are there own worst enemy ,we just need time to evolve and if we can do it without hate, greed, and religion getting in the way we may just have an interstellar future beyond this small rock but don't hold your breath

As regards statistics, here's a lesson on how to do it....and all of it is true....
When fuel was 70p/litre, the oil companies made 11p/litre.
Now fuel is 100p/litre, the oil companies make 36p/litre....that's a 340% increase in their revenue while the price of crude oil has only gone up by 120%.
In the same time, the goverment's share of the money (tax) on a litre has gone down from 84% to 63%.
So which one of the above is profiteering?

I think the main thing to bare in mind is that protests raise awareness. Awareness keeps the Government concious of the electorates feelings and thus more likely to consider their position. Apathy is the way toward an elected dictatorship.

The farmers who were involved in the last protests holding up the roads should spread some mature manure on the corporate oil giants showcase offices if they want to show unhappiness with the situation , corporations HATE bad publicity with a vengeance. Even then they will be limited with what cost can be witheld off fuel prices ,internation commodity that it is and all that ... ho hum
