ALL 4 SPEAKERS DONE!!!
used 12mm MDF, and the sound quality improvement is 10 fold. Before i (with loud on and bass and treble at 0) i could get to vol 22 before it would start distorting, now i can go to vol 30, and the clarity is perfect.
Even at low volumes (20 and below) the sound stage is a hell of a lot better. Was definitaly worth the time and effort. (4x Speakers £52, jigsaw £9, mdf £5, 6 hours work)
Although all that said, the bass in the car now seem actually lower than is was before, so i dont know if the speakers need running in, or i need to add an active sub OR a new head unit OR amp the current head unit.
I do know that even though the quality is much improved, its still not upto a standard i can live with unfortunatly.

When I replaced the 'speakers with the standard HU I had stupid EQ settings to get it to sound half decent (bass turned right up etc.) so although it could be one or more units wired out of phase it's probably the HU.
As soon as I added a decent HU it was fine.
If I were you, I'd replace the HU before thinking about adding amps/subs etc.

dynamat the doors as well as a new HU and getting the speakers out of phase is most prob reason for loss of bass, easy check is to undo just one set speaker connections and see if bass returns, if it does then it was out of phase.

Or just use the balance and fader controls to listen to one loudspeaker and check the bass from that (not as good as the disconnection method above, but a lot easier!).
