That's a load of b********.

They won that final by a lucky last minute drop goal - Australia were an equal team. Secondly the All Blacks weren't anywhere near their usual form during that world cup and I think you'll find that they are regarded as the best Southern Hemisphere side. (Certainly the best team in the world now after beating the Lions and winning the Tri-nations)

The reason that the English soccer team can't do well is because there is no passion or pride in playing for their country. They are a bunch or overpaid nancy boys and prima donnas who see playing for England as their right or as a chore. They couldn't give a toss about winning for England it's all about their image. And they don't play as a team.

Field a team of amateurs and they would probably give more effort than the current bunch of clowns.

The Premier****es simply can't really be bothered to play for England it would appear to me - they get more glory and cash turning out for Chelski and Manure, every week. There's no pride or passion playing for their country anymore, you can see it in their body language.

Furthermore, the anti - internationals attitiude of managers like Ferguson only tacitly encourages it, always maoning about players going off on internaional duty etc.

Pants, total pants, just like when they played Denmark ............ they should all go. Did you know that the whole of the NI squad is not worth one of some of the English 'stars' ?

hhhm. kiwiGTI: now that's a bit of a giveaway isn't it.

lucky drop goal? sounds like antipodean sour grapes to me ;-)

if you remember the pattern of play, two set pieces by dawson & johnson to get wilko in the right place to drop the goal. which he did: a deliberate, desperate play to ****** the game thanks to a guy with - alongside michael lynagh & andrew mehrtens - the best boots in the game. that's not luck - that's what kipling meant by grace under pressure.

the all blacks are consistently the most dangerous southern hemisphere side, ergo, consistently the most dangerous side in the world over time/performance - but that notwithstanding, the aussies have won the world cup twice, the all blacks only once. form is one thing, but the result is all that counts.

however, my point was that england's world cup XV - at that time (those three words are important) - were the best bar none and the best rugby side we have ever fielded. after all, we won the world cup and were the better side, as the ockers grudgingly admitted, bless their whingeing hearts. as is often said - just look in the score book to check.

as to your point about the england football XI - i couldn't agree more. they're over-paid, under-educated, under-motivated, under-performing, out of control and totally lacking in the pride that accompanies representing one's country. and it will stay this way as long the clubs take precedence.

the FA would do well to think about how central contracts have helped turn our international cricket performances around to deliver consistency and confidence. but, they'll probably just be fire-fighting the latest faria alam scandal instead...

Why dont england just play ashley cole on the left wing?
Hes clearly a very attacking left back, so it wouldnt be that much of a change for him, i mean, arsenal have played him up front before now ffs! And theres plenty of left backs that can cover for him, thats never been much of a problem.

And does anyone think that this is all starting to look very much like Mike Bassett: England Manager... you wait til sven goes back to "4-4 fookin 2!!!"

I'll tell you something about overpaid, a buddy of mine buys land and he has bought a plot which is about 3 doors away from Wayne Rooney's new house in Prestbury, he told me that they have spent over 50k on f**king curtains, whats that all about.

Christ my house did not cost 50k when i bought it!!!!!!!!

You can make all the excuses you want ......... when the players are meant to be professionals, earning £50k - £100k a week, i'd expect the ******* to learn to play in any position, and pretty damn quick. Ok, with the exception of goal keeping....

WTF 's Rooney whinging for, he's being played out of position, on the left, So what, he's got 2 ******* feet. Next time play the whinger 'rightback'....... right back, as far behind the goal as possible, in the crowd, so he can whinge with everyone else, instead of making a show of himself on national tv.

You got players from the champions of Europe, and England...getting played off the park by someone from Plymouth (sorry Plymouth fans).

i was dissapointed at the result, but you have to hand it to the Irish, they had a game plan, they worked for each other ....they got a result.

I think s.McLaren should be manager, at least he shows like he cares. The only thing Sven cares about is which hole he's going to **** next. Unfortunately for him this time, he's got the nobbing.

Dont know bout anyone else, i'm fed up with these high profile managers.
Get one of the "grass roots" guys in that speak their mind...a bit of passion and go get 'em attitude.
One who would also use the best players in their correct positions and only their correct positions.

Another load of rubbish.

How much Rooney earns has nothing to do with his favourite position, why all the jealousy, lets face it if you were offered 50k per week would you refuse,of course not.
As for Svens private life whats that got to do with anything?

Basically what went wrong was the formation, players out of position and forget how much Rooney earns,if you are dying to play up front and you are put on the wing you arent gonna like it.

As for them not caring, you play in front of 30,000 fans and you're not bothered.Absolute tosh.

Agreed, Last night was more to do with the better fielded team winning!!!!

Your never going to win a football match with 1 midget striker up front against 9 Irish defenders in the box. IT WONT WORK.... well at least you wont be scoring more than 1 lucky goal....

Tactics won the game last night. Or should I say, tactics lost the game last night because they wasnt used correctly by a certain clueless individual. You could see the fustration on McLarens face last night, trying to organise something which Sven ballsed up, and what did Sven do? NOTHING, I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the dressing room last night, wouldnt it be interesting too see him in there? I'll bet he didnt give anyone a rollocking!!!! and to be fair, the only person who needed a rollocking was himself because the players on the pitch did what they was told.

Spot on Paul.
4 million pounds a year for Sven.... 4 million.... A team on paper that is in the top 4 in the world but it plays together as if each team member comes from opposite ends of the cosmos and all speak different languages...
Absolutely no cohesion, inconsistent formations, building around out of form players just because they're "his boys"(why owen when defoe is playing so well etc?)... Players out of position and absurd substitution ...
He's so so lucky that the yawnful game is being played on Channel 4 today to take some media attention away from his ineptitude...
Alas he's too expensive to sack
