Wages...wtf ?
#31
When I started work I started on about 9.5k!! at 18 years old!
Think about that when you complain about starting wages!
I'm now on about 25k a year at 24 years old, not massive money but i'm comfortable
I think as far as average wages go, london wages push them artificially high due to cost of living etc I live near leeds and imagine the average pay is probably much lower that 30k

LOL.. when I started work I spent a year earning 4k p.a. @ 16, couple of years on day release to college at 18 I was on about 8k p.a. Took me alot of hassling to get a pay rise to 11k was only on about 14k when I was 20. with a nice just to 17.5k when I was 21 which enabled me to get ont he property ladder. last 4 years Ive managed to get just shy of 24k a year including bonuses..... Cant see much more of an increase now though

My first job after leaving home at 16 - labouring on a building site - paid £110 a week - after tax I used to take home around £90 p.w. !!!!
Owning your own business is definitely the only way to make real money - at least if I'm quiet and dont have anything to do I can sit on my **** without having a boss trying to 'find' me work to do.
Does amuse me though when you get these kids fresh out of Uni with no experience who expect to earn £25K a year straight away ! I know people who will NEVER earn that, even after being in the same job for 40 years - and they probably know more about the job than a graduate ever will.

Bugger all else down here though, hence why from Wednesday I could have a total career change doing something I've never done before for a lot more money

When I left colege after my A levels in the lates 80s my first job was about 9K but got a payrise in the first 3 months and ended up bagging about 15K a year. Plus I carried on with my paper round, worked in the lcoal fishing shop at the weekend and had my own business repairing fishing reels too.
It nearly killed me it was too much pressure.
I stuck with the day job and moved to MacWarehouse in the early 90s when margins were obscene and money was plentiuful. It was quite easy to earn 6K per month but since the late 90s its become very hard and the whole industry has seen wages slump. That said I'mbeing head hunted and last week was offered a package with 120K OTE which sounds nice but there is more to life than money.
Its always a trade of between stress, responsibility, long hours vs social life, having fun and not turning into a stress head. I've decided not to take it simply because its not right for me. I don't need a life sapping level of pressure, just need ot earn enough to get by and have some nice tings and have fun and also have the time to enjoy life.

Still at the age of 23 i was earning, due to flitting from job to job, not really being qualified in anything, or arsed, around £13k.
At 25, A nice little move and 6 months training and my P60 showed £48K last year, but i do work hard and quite a few hours for that.

i started off in retail, did all the nvq 1-3, then i got my own shop at 24. I have to do to jobs as the shop word didnt pay much, but i use to enjoy it.
now im a baker and work 40 hours a week 6am-2pm min, some time 6 day weeks, i work my nuts off as i work 8 + hour days with no brakes etc, in a hot bakery, that i know i have no future as it is a family run company, but why do i do it????
1) its about 5 mins from home
2)the pay is ok £7.50 p/h (not compaired to alot of your jobs)
3)i have my scoobs to cheer me up when i finish work.
thats what i do, bit may not be the best job/wage in the world, but it helps pay the bills, and im not bein a bum on the doll money
