That used to be the case; the law changed in 2003 though. Enforcement is now privatised and administered by Capita; think Camera Partnership for TV licences.....

students can use a portable TV providing their parents have a licence at their own home. You should have seen us trying to convince the guy that a 46 inch projector was 'portable' - Well - it moves :shrug: - Now when I but anything TV related I pay cash and give my neighbours name and addy (cos hes a tosser
)
BTW - Did you know that the new detector vans (with stealth paint) can now tell if you are using a DVD player to play hooky movies
- Saw this on TV a few weeks ago, so it must be true

lol....few days ago it someone whinging about a parking offence error - now its moaning about TV licence peoplechecking up.
some people need to have a look around...go down your local hospital, go check out some old peoples homes or wander round London at night and see the people living rough. If you still think you have it bad then right your stupid letters of complaint.
i think nelson mandella moaned less about injustice (good job he was a SN'er)

Yea i get these letters every time i buy a new TV.
It makes sense really to check that the person buying the TV has a licence. BUT their database systems are missing one massive aspect.
They should cross reference the address of the purchaser with those on file before sending the letter to see they already have one. Because their systems only currently cross reference the NAME and if your licence is in some one elses name, parents, girl friend, wife etc... then it sends the letter.
Just a load of red tape, if you got a licence, bin the letter.
