Great - 2006 sees a whole new car, with increased prices and increased insurance costs, but still the same body shell that has been going for years, and then 2007 will see yet another car which again screws uo used car values for those that have (stupidly) taken the plunge and bought a new one...
One day Subaru will understand that no other manufacturer changes their cars every year, and perhaps they would have a bit more loyalty. Let's be honest, take away the WRX and the Impreza is very very average...

'changing' - so wouldn't you call a new front end etc etc a change? That was what I meant. A year ago we had the new colour, and a new interior plus other mods. Now we get a new front end and a far bigger change. 2007 seems to be yet another change. Enough change????

I think they have created an absolute mess with this new car! Finally given it the bigger power plant two years late and still pushing rubbish bhp through it, then that stupid second rear spoiler - wtf is that all about? I cancelled my order for one a few days back as I think it's absolutely horrible. Subaru have turned a 100% fan towards the darkside (i.e. Mitsi) ... tis a sad day!

Having owned subarus over 4 years I think I can safely say I know how it will drive. I currently have a WR1 and to be honest the drive will not be dis-similar to that or the MY05 I was given to test for a weekend. There will be absolutely no noticeable difference in the drive of the new car over any of the previous STis.
That's why I think I'm more than able to order a subaru which I've never driven!

It is a fecking mess. I mean take away the large scoop, put a pig egly front end on it and a stupid pointless extra spoiler.
Give it a 2.5 but then leave the standard bhp close to what it was before!!
The least they could have done was boost the power to something around 350bhp before an optional PPP kit. Perhaps even give it a front mount like the top of the line evos.
I never thought I'd start liking the mitsis over the scoobs but I am being heavily pulled that way now.

Well i thought the point of the 2.5 was to take on all the new EVO's which have much more power. 300, 320, 360, 400 etc as standard...
So they put a 2.5 in and dont boost up the BHP to match the compeition. Crazy.
I am thinking of turning to the dark side on the next purchase, unless they release a 22b in the new shape. Cause the concept build is awesome.

The basic Sti has 280 -20 more than the basic Evo and the same as the 280MR. I'd bet on a PPP taking that up to about 320 comfortably (i.e. same as the Evo 320 MR) and most reputable tuners being able to get 350 out of them given a decat and remap (i.e. more than the 340MR).
But really, where does this horsepower chasing end!?! Do you really need any more than 350bhp on the roads - that's serious performance!! Subaru -rightly IMHO- have focused on drivability.

And my socks cost slightly less than the ever-increasing price of a Subaru.
Change is good - but not when it comes at the expense of every other customer, more frequently than ANY other car manufacturer and not even always for the better....

The point is though that if you touch the exhaust/ engine management on your PPP'd 06 STI your warranty will go to ****e. However with Mitsi they already have the MR340 and you can then add modifications to that from a catalogue of different items - warranty still preserved.
The MR340 and MR400 drive better than any Subaru that I have ever driven. Having recently test driven a spec C I for one believe that the mitsis are now the better car by a long way.
Basic fact is they have given the car a 2.5 but done nothing with the 2.5. So so so stupid! It is pushing drivers away, not that the arogant w@nker dealer network Subaru have haven't done that already!

The MR320 needs £750 on a remap and you can push 400bhp instantly.
I also have the TSL triple 333pack 333bhp and my mates MR320 still faster and pulls away.

Interesting point to all this as well.
My MY05 WRX SL with PPP booked at retail £24,000 (when purchased on a '54 plate). Cheapest Evo at same time was £28,000 (excluding discounts).
Same cars worth now (according to Parkers Guide) - trade in:
WRX - £14,000
Evo - £22,000
Even with the discount, the Subaru has lost another £4k in a year.
And people wonder why we question Subaru continually changing their models - or perhaps wonder what the effect will be...... hurrumph!

But why (now) would you buy a car which has been given a 2.5ltr, but can't use it??? I would rather (now) go and get an EVO MR340 and then spend some extra cash putting a front mount and bigger turbo on (through the mitsubishi network - so the warranty remains intact.)
It's like giving a man a 15 inch **** but then not letting him use it. What have you done Subaru????

This horsepower chasing game is futile. There is more to a performance car than headline figures.
How much faster point to point will a 400bhp car be on real roads? I wouldn't be surprised if the MR320 was the faster car on everyday conditions cause of the huge lag that the MR400 has.
Subaru have never been about trying to best the Evo for all out ability, they've been out producing the more rounded performer that's easier to live with in the real world and has more character.
Also what about the suspension set up? I drove a MY99 and Evo 6 GSR back to back down a bumpy back road and I'm telling you the MY99 was the car you'd be quicker in. Now, I know full well that the Evo would have shown it a clean pair of heels on a smooth track, but how much time do you spend on a track? What you need on the road is a good broad spread of power and a suspensions set up that can handle bad surfaced roads. What you don't want is some harsh laggy monster that'll bounce you off the road or blow you into the hedges.
Subaru have held back with the engine outputs for the MY06 so they've got a bit of play to develop faster revisions (to remain competitive) for the next MYs and give Prodrive some room to strut their stuff. Why would they produce an engine already tuned to its maximum potential from the outset?
NS04
PS.I don't even want to know how often an MR400 needs servicing!
