HD-TV works in a different way, and given that Sky are testing about 60 consecutive channels with HDTV and all are working, it will solve the problem. Also, HDTV means that all the sound is Dolby Digital 5.1 at a minimum, so you get the full blown surround sound with everything (sports etc) although obviously live sport will also sound different than a properly encoded movie.

The stuff about free to air having it in 2010 is not strictly true - they have to have it by then, per Gov regulations. As do Sky, only Sky have chosen to launch it way earlier (as other countries like the US have had it for a good few years now), and I'm sure many FTA stations will do it before then anyway.

And, lets be honest, there's not a load of TV's out there that can handle it yet - so as 99.9999% of the population will still have standard TV's next year, anyone who upgrades to Sky HDTV but does not change their TV will not see a blinkin' bit of difference.

I also hear Sky are adding £10 a month charge to anyone who takes the HDTV option - which also required a new digibox as well - and that's for people who currently have Sky+. It ain;t cheap....

Trouble is he's got 8 in the engine and 8 in his radio

The new Sky HD receivers will have HDMI connectors for the best quality HD output so if you want to see it in all it’s glory your gonna have to get a new tv

Default HDTV

This is all academic argument - it's not if but when boys and girls, and as Pete has said, the BBC has made a commitment to be broadcasting HDTV by 2010. The US and Japan have had HDTV for years (no surprises there then). The BBC and ITV now make lots of their dramas in HD format so they can be sold onto the American and other markets. They then have to pay to have those very programmes downgraded so that they can be broadcast over here!!!

And, you're all forgetting the other platforms that will bring HD pictures as well.
  1. Games - Sony PS3 will be HD and the game discs will contain upto 50GB of info (Bluray)
  2. HD DVD - movies too! The step up quality is like from VHS to DVD. The technology really is brill.
So, if you're buying a telly now, make sure it's got a HD READY sticker on it so you are ready for the big change. Alternatively, buy a cheap charlie model (you can get a 32" widescreen telly for £350-500) knowing you will have to replace it in about 5 years but by then the technology will be much cheaper. You pays your money... My telly has been resuscitated twice and is about to give up the ghost, so I'm buying a cheap charlie widescreen CRT and will do the HD thing later on.

I was reading that the Sky HD boxes will also have analogue component connections which my current Tosh CRT (36ZP38) has - would there be a big diff in quality over a HDMI connection and what's the chances my TV will be compatible ?

isnt HDTV centred alot more around resolution? Id be suprised if your going to be getting a super picture via an analogue connection through what'll be a Thomson box I dont see the point in HDTV for a while yet. look at it in another 5 years IMO and it'll be worth it

If your TV has component in then you will see a better pic than standard scart etc. but HDMI will be a better signal format when connected to a new tv.

dont blaspheme the thomson box, thomson own RCA which is one of the best us hdtv box suppliers, it will just be an existing box in a new jacket.

im just not willing to pay the rumoured £600 UPGRADE FEE FOR SKY+ CUSTOMERS FOR HDTV.

you just know it will be half tha within a year.

Unclebuck & dpb : you are both probably on the wind up juice re this thread, but be careful what you say and how you generalise.
I am neither pikey scum nor am I a saddo. I have a Sky dish and a large screen Tv for which I have worked darned hard all my life. It's now time to reward myself and I derive great peasure from my selected viewing.
As for High Definition Telly. Only time will tell as with all these "new" innovations.

Rant over , coffee time.
