We have just got back from the rally. It was such a tragic accident the crowd stood still and silent as the news was broadcasted over the tannoys. The stadium was very emotional and we all paid our respects and are thinking of the family and teams at this very sad time.

The Frenchman wanted to avoid winning the event and therefore the title in the aftermath of a tragic accident in which Peugeot co-driver Michael Park was killed.

With Gronholm pulling out of his third place in the rally as a mark of respect for his Peugeot colleague and Solberg getting eight points for second, the 10 points for Loeb's victory would have been enough to seal a second consecutive drivers' title for the French Citroen driver, but he was understandably keen to avoid this situation. As a result, he deliberately opted to check in to the final time control late to incurr a two-minute time penalty which dropped him to third overall behind Citroen team-mate Francois Duval and Solberg.

There were no celebrations at the end-of-rally podium ceremony in Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, and the drivers and crowd held a minute's silence .
just in case, you were in the same boat as me and didnt know what loeb had done!

I must say it was a very honerable thing to do.

a great loss to the sport.

All comments about Loeb are spot on - however it is a shame that he had to make a concious decision to do so due the the inflexability of the powers that be. The points from Rally GB should have been null and voided as a mark of respect to Michael if nothing else

Terribly sad news - life really is too short.

If there's any solace in all of this I guess it's that he died doing something he clearly loved doing - can any of us ask any more than that?

Edited to ask: Does anyone know how Richard Burns is now? I tried looking on the web and found a very odd website that seemed to be a gleeful list of ill and dying celebs - how sick????

A group of us were on the Margam stage when it happened. We could hear the cars coming for what seem ages - then it just stopped. We knew someone had gone off, but nobody imagined it would be this bad. The first thing we heard on a scanner was the TV crews asking for an ambulance. Terrible thing to happen that put a real downer on what had been an excellent rally. God knows what it will do to Martin - having to live with this for the rest of his life.
