The guy in his 50's who died had competed in 24 out of the 25 Great North Runs so it's wrong to presume they were all fat and unfit

I agree with ajm , they should introduce speed limits for the joggers ,say 2-3 mph ,if four people were killed in car accidents on the same stretch of road on the same day there would be an outcry! So remember all joggers ,slow down as speed kills!......... Kill your Speed ,Not Yourself.

LOL @ Trucker Ted

Mind you if I jogged at 2-3mph, I'd die from old age or boredom

Heatstroke and dehydration have got to be the biggest worries for a race that could potentially last for 2-3hrs for some. I've known of two fit young lads (teenagers) that have simply dropped dead with a hereditary heart problem and a brain haemorrhage.

Sometimes in life your times just up.

A friend nearly died on a run last year. He overheated, became disoriented and ended up in hospital in a coma. Was over 24 hours later that it began to be clear that he'd survive in some shape or form.

Yeah to say they were all unfit is unfair, the guy in the paper looked in good shape.

Think some were just unlucky

Some people just dont know when to stop though, because the guy had done it 24 times, does not mean he can do it for another 24 times.... At some stage your body will tell you what it can and can't cope with, some people choose to ignore it and carry on regardless.
