Well, last time I filled up, the local Shell did not have Optimax and the girl behind the counter looked at me as if to say "What the F$ck do I care when Optimax will be available"

Had to go to Tesco (which I thought bought its fuel from ESSO) and filled up with their 97 and then popped in a bottle of millers booster which supposedly gave me 99.

Drove to Oxford and back with some spirited driving here and there and the car was fine. Think its cheaper for me to put in Tesco SL and millers than a tank of Optimax which is still 101.9p here (if its available at the one and only pump!)

Nick.

You ever tried the own brand stuff (?), it's awful compared to the real stuff ie from Weetabix! Say no more ...

LOL well I have it on good authority from my wife, who's an expert on breakfast cereals, that the Tesco's Wheat Biscuits are Weetabix in a crappy looking packet for 2/3 the price. But only those ones. The cheaper Tesco Value ones are NOT Weetabix, nor are any other supermarket own brands. BTW try Sainsbury's really cheap chipolata sausages - 'mechanically recovered' meat but by jove they taste damn good! Anyway, we're getting off the subject.

The point is, I don't actually CARE whether it's 90 RON 'European' fuel that's been 'boosted' up to 99, or whether it's 100/130 Avgas that's been cut to give me pump fuel, or indeed whether it's concentrated yak spunk. As long as it's BS approved and given the octane rating I need it's fine.

About the only grain of truth that I've noticed here - apart from everyone who agrees with me that is - is the thing about supermarkets not putting fancy detergents etc in the fuel. OK that's probably true - detergents aren't necessary for the octane rating and I'd imagine you can probably cut costs that way by not putting so much in, or not such 'good' detergents. But actually, does it really matter? If you're so worried about keeping your engine clean, then stick some fuel system cleaner through every 10k miles and have done with it.

If the truth be told, I always ran my turbocharged Clio on Optimax because I needed the octane - but every time the engine was out, it was clean as a whistle internally, and the oil always went in golden and came out clear and only slightly darker. But then that may well have happened anyway, whatever fuel I used. If engines needed the fancy detergents in Optimax, they would be included as part of the BS standard. The fact is that they are not.

I actually prefer the Tesco's crunchy nut cornflakes to the Kelloggs ones!

Cheers for that Nick, made me smile!

My Uncle works for a well known food producer; they supply all the supermarkets with their own brands as well as the "proper" brands. He tells me that the stuff that goes to M&S is way better than the other supermarkets hence own brands are not "all the same" ...

Anyhoo back to fuel, I sent an email to Tesco yesterday that said:

"Is your fuel good quality? If so how can you prove this? I tend to avoid it due to lingering doubts on quality."

Their reply was interesting:

"Thank you for your email.

I would like to advise that all fuel supplied to Tesco, complies with the relevant British Standard.

The variations include:

Unleaded - BSEN228 (Octane 95 RON) ? Ultra Low Sulphur meeting Govt. spec)

Lead Replacement Petrol - BS4040 (Octane 97 RON)

Diesel BSEN590 (Ultra Low Sulphur)

Our fuel, the majority of which comes from UK oil companies, matches the quality of other leading fuel retailers. It is regularly tested, by both the supplier and our own Technical Services department. Trading Standards, when called in to check our fuel, have always found it to conform to the correct standard.

Tesco is the largest independent fuel retailer in the UK and one in twelve gallons sold is Tesco fuel. We also run our own fleet of over 2000 vehicles on our own fuel."
