Why don't you hit ebay and buy a total piece of sh*t 4x4 to see you through and then just punt it in the spring. You might lose a few £hundred but you'd save that on fuel/mileage-based deprecitation and scooby/bmw running costs anyway. Then you'll have the rustic, country-go-anywhere doctor image

If it really is only a few days that the summer tyres on the subaru can't cope then why not get some chains?
Or even chains on the RWD. The only PITA is as soon as you've cleared the heavy stuff you have to stop and take them off
