I wouldn't use an online dating service myself, but I see it as being far from sad. Nowadays, a great many people are working long hours and have very little time for social events etc where they can meet people. A lot of those same people have internet access. It seems to me that while most of these people would probably not use the old style dating agency, they would quite readily register with an online one. After all it doesn't hurt to "have a look".
My conclusion is, it's a sign of the times, as it's now regarded as being socially acceptable.

Never tried it, but if I was sitting in at home a couple of nights a week and was single I would probably have a go, without taking it too seriously. I think the worry is becoming obsessed with meeting people via this method.
This can be one of several ways to meet new people, rather than the sole method of meeting a partner, or a quick fling.
I think to many it will always have a feint whiff of desperation, but if approached in the right manner it probably could be a lot of fun.
A mate of mine, who is a single lad, charming, pretty good looking, successful, gets well over his fair share of ladies, has recently started using online dating sites for a bit of additional fun. I wouldn't say he was deparate or sad.
If you do meet up with people who have masqueraded behind a 10 year old picture where they were half their current size, I think you have every right to walk away, or have one polite drink and then do so.
The people who ARE sad are the ones replying on here like they're some sort of love demi-god who could pull women/men in their sleep. The benefits of hiding behind the internet eh!

Oh, did you wish me to instead reply with some angry comment? Why waste the effort when I can click a button and ask for the offending post to be removed.
