helicopters are very hard to get the hang of. But once you do you can cause some serious problems for the other team![Smile](images/smilies/smile.gif)
Just out of interest, does anyone on here connect via a wireless modem?
I just installed the new internet connection last night and found some lag issues - the connection is good.
It could have been a poor server, everyones ping was high 140 odd, so maybe it was a bit of both, my new system warming up and a poor server.

The problem may be XP's wireless zero config service occasionally renegotiating the link (or at least one of the potential problems). I found i had to set the wireless router to non standard channel (< 5) to avoid interference in my area - this improve single strength and stability when connecting from my PCs.
Might be something on http://www.tweakguides.com/ that may help you for BF2...

Would you expect a 2 meg line to be running faster than the 54mbps or is this its target speed?
Sorry to blather on in the bf2 post

Think of the ADSL Router as a router.
It will route traffic internally at the maximum possible speed between devices. Therefore if you have a 2 PCs with 54mb/s cards and a 54mb/s wireless router, the maximum throughput between each device is 54mb/s
When you get an internet request (web page, email, BF2) then the router sends it via ADSL at 256k/s and the response comes back to you at 2mb/s max.
In fact mb/s is the theoretical maximum amount of data that will be transfered in a second. You will find that BF2 won't be sending anything like that much data.
What you need to be watching for in data transfer terms and BF2 is the latency between you and the server - the lower the latency, the better

I did notice before I changed that some bf2 servers I got a consistent low ping of 20 - 30 odd, and the odd occasion on a poor server that had everyones up in the mid 100s.
I will try again tonight once i update the patch and get a few more servers to choose from.
Puff thanks for the info, I am not really 100% fluent in pc language mate, I get the general gist of what you are getting at.
Lets put it this way,
A) NTL hardwired modem - when I got a bad ping on a server or suffered lag, I put it down to a bad server more often than not or the odd case of a problem on the connection.
B) BT wireless modem - is this a better or worse route to access the net / gaming, given that for arguements sake, both ntl and bt ran at the same speed (in this case bt are twice as fast) will a wireless set up generate more cases of lag than a hard wired unit at the same speed?

Sort of
What you are getting there is the latency between your ISP and the game server. So, if your ISP has good gear and is on a good connection with the server, then you'll get lower pings than someone who is not. Try playing on a US or European server and you will notice your ping goes up.
Also can be affected by the contention ratio in as much as the number of people with your ISP d/loading pr0n at the same time as you wish to shoot someone![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)
Me? I play via Demon as my ISP and consistently have a low ping as the setup they use is top-notch.
You shouldn't really get any difference in wireless and hard-wired modems - just to confuse a bit though, wireless keyboards/mouses may affect your gameplay!

Sorted out the upgrade from 1.21 to 1.22, which gave me more servers to choose from. On the better running servers my game play did improve, pings of 15 / 30 on average.
The only downside is that I still get the odd lag spike whereby my ping goes from 14 up to 800 at worst case last night, then drops again. Probably happens three or four times per map.
Its not that bad, its just frustrating, I have changed the chanel the router was working on as per bt in new delhi's recomendations, but that hasnt stopped it.
I think I will give it a few more days then phone up BT and tell them to either send an engineer around to hard wire the thing in or collect it and I will get ntl back in, with whom I never really had a problem.

I'm into it but the short moments of excitement are p'd off against long moments of spawning (bear in mind I die mucho times) & the sometimes inordinate amounts of time taken from getting from spawn to shooting someone...
