I've only read the book, missed this thread, so how does the film compare?

Cracked me up as a kid when the wardens find how he got out, "Oh **** it's ****!" is that line still in the film?

To be a pedant it was actually a very good short story. It's in the same book as The Running Man and An Apt Pupil (the one about the ****).

To really be a pedant

The book that the Shawshank came from is called Different Seasons, and also has Apt Pupil(the **** one), The Breathing Method(havent read this yet) and The Body(turned into a film called Stand By Me).

The Running Man was a seperate novel.

Currently reading this book, its a really good read, and the film is superb(same director/screenwriter as Shawshank).

Sounds like you need to update your copy on DVD though, mine isnt a flipper

Ah yes, you're right. I think The Running Man is also in "The Bachman Books" along with a few other well known stories (can't remember which ones now).

The Breathing Method is a great story!

A 'flipper'? My £3:99 disc has full-frame 4:3 on one side and anamorphic 16:9 on the other, the bitrates low though.....

It's just a shame that Apt Pupil and the Running Man turned into absolutely crap films. Both had really good potential if the film makers were more faithful to the books.
The Breathing Method is good but kind of relies on the macabre ending.
The Bachman Books also has The Long Walk which is a really good story too.

Whoops didnt read page three before replying.

Agreed "The running Man" book was far far better than the film, two totally different stories though.

If they had followed the book more when making the film it would have been brilliant

Was chatting with a friend earlier about Shawshank-Apparently,when it first came out,it recieved a right slating in the revievs, and as said before, was a box office flop-ironically,its now put down as one of the finest films made.

Go and buy the DVD, your eyes and mind will thank you for it

My favourite bit was Morgan Freeman peering in from the left of the hole and the look of almost wonderment on his face

I have to agree too - someone lent me Shawshank and American History X a few weeks ago, and have to say I thought they are probably two of the best films I've ever seen! (Apart from all the Hugh Grant chickflics, naturally )

Shawshank Redemtion is what I call an "Etch a Sketch" film - after I'd seen it I really wished I could shake my head and forget the whole thing - just so I could sit through it all again and enjoy the twists and turns.

Sixth Sense would be another film in that category.....

The Shawshank Redemption bears watching over and over though; Sixth Sense is a film that you can only really watch twice.....
