I explained to my lady how the Exige's superior PWR and ground effects would conspire to give the porker a pasting; and then it didn't. Now I can't justify hours spent on scoobynet or reading evo or watching car programmes because clearly it's taught me ****-all. I demand a re-match.

If you're going to copy TG, either do it properly or stick to what you know. They need to ditch that annoying cow VBH, and that Tom bloke who tries too hard to be funny. I don't mind Plato because he knows his stuff, or Tiff because he seems to like the same sorts of things in a car as me!

VBH for all her faults would probably show about 99% of you on here a clean pair of heels around a track though - however she is butt ugly and just looking at her makes me come to the conclusion that she has had a few late nights.

I think he's great, yes, he's loud, opinionated can be a bit flipant and daft etc... I can understand why some people take exception to him.

BUT -and this is why he's popular:

Most of the above is in the name of entertainment. Moreover, he conveys and generates enthusiasm about the subject matter and manages to avoid the whole thing becomming very "geeky" He's also seen to be no friend of the manufacturers or government and not frightened about treading on a few toes in the cause of being honest about what he thinks of a car or a policy. People like that. He's seen as a voice for the motorist, who just isn't getting a fair crack of the whip in the UK.

That's what makes entertaining to me. If Clarkson wasn't so outspoken with his bizarre opinions and intentional disreguard to the "PC nimbys" then he wouldn't be where he is now. Hammond is getting very irritating in recent episodes though, getting far to cockey. Still, Carkson always manages to bring him down a peg or two

5th gear suffers from the big egos of presenters too (if not more), Tiff and an VBH are extremely crass. One thing about TG's "Stig" is that because he (or she ) is anonymous there is no ego or smug "look at me, I'm such a good driver who thinks that the verbal diarrhea comming from my mouth actually makes sense, but hell, if I can keep talking it may show how good I am " .

Clarkson, as big as the ego he has is...has NEVER said he was a good driver, he often remarks he absolutely crap - and its that modesty which the 5th gear preneters lack (It's never the driver is it? Must be the cars fault ). Ok, Hammond's "I'm a driving god" driving would make anyone cringe...but you just know that when he gets too full of himself Clarkson will make a quip and post an outtake of him fooking it all up prooving he clearly isn't

In the end of the day...if you don't like it, don't watch it. I watched most of 5th gear last night...although I switched off through the multitude of adverts. The only thing that will make me watch it in future is if there is any decent cars on, otherwise I'll switch it off.

I see TG as a bit like Scoobynet, most other Subaru websites are about Subarus, Subarus and err, Subarus. Like 5th gear is cars cars and cars. But SN has NSR, DIY, Muppets and even Photography. TG likewise has celebrities, muppet antics, banter, and general good entertainment amongst all of the usual car stuff. To say that my Gran (who can't drive) likes to watch it, must say something about the shows broad appeal - although that last comment maybe open to mass ridicule, but the point being that someone who has no interest in cars likes to watch it.

I think that when the original Top Gear was axed, the programme commissioners showed great perspicacity in realising that the traditional format of "Motoring Programme" was absolutely dead in the water.

Shortly after, they had the ill-fated but mildly entertaining Clarkson chat-show vehicle that wasn't quite cutting the mustard because Clarkson wasn't doing what he's good at - that is, making us laugh by talking bollocks about cars. Combining the inventiveness and schoolboy daftness of the chat-show with a less fuddy-duddy approach to cars made the new Top Gear an excellently entertaining show - which doesn't always hit the mark but is leagues ahead of anything else.

Unfortunately, 5th Gear is still stumbling around like a re-animated corpse, stinking and with bits dropping off hither and thither.

I disagree, TG used to be really good and all it seems to be now is everyone sucking up to Clarkson and the studio is filled with canned laughter imo.

Clarkson was s*** hot ten years ago, now all we get is Clarkson putting people down an trying to be funny to an audience who wont question him just simply to boost his already self opinionated inflated ego.

he clearly thinks he is head and shoulders above just about anybody (even the BBC) after his recent rant about were to film the show.

The Stig however is pure f**king class!

The whole TG thing with Clarkson driving round in a merc and porker getting shot at by snipers was just staggeringly rubbish. Apart from that one piece I'm an avid fan of TG.

5th Gear on the other hand.... VBH can do no wrong in my biased view and Plato is amazing. I still hate Needell after pushing Mansell into the barriers in touring cars (and nearly killing him) so he can rot in hell.

I remember that ...thanks for reminding of the other reason why I hate Tiff - IIRC it was because of Tiff that Touring cars now have nets instead of windows on the driver's door.

Tiff is a great car slider but not fast
VBH would get beaten by many many drivers, just that becasue shes a Woman with a "dirty/sexy/annoying" (depending on your taste) voice she gets the job

5th gear? its truly appaling I cannot even bear to watch it for a minute, it is so bland it makes daytime TV look interesting same borint tired old format, reminds me what TG used to be like when I was a kid when chris goffey and ***** wollard used to do circa the 70s!
