Shaun, perhaps you need some lessons
Quite simply, drag racing is about finding how fast your car can get from the start to the end of the 1/4! (nothing like stating the obvious )
If you genuinley (sp?) want to know what this time is, you need to make sure that the car is in its best possible state just prior to the run. Therefore, temperatures must be spot on, ie not too high.
You also need to be spot on too, and totally focused on what your doing. The number of people who launch the car, then look at the other person they are against, is to me, quite funny. The number of people who have to look at the gearstick to change gear is funny too.
Finally, mechanical sympathy should be low on the agenda.
Once the car is ready, its down to the driver.
Line up, watch the lights, get your revs in the right region, watch the lights (NOTHING ELSE), lights go green, release the clutch and apply the throttle when your ready, then just WATCH the rev counter, and change gear at the appropriate revs, wacth NOTHING else other than the track in your perifferal vision, once through quarter mile, lift off and slow down, now you can look around.
Finding optimum rev change is crucial too. Its not just a case of redlining it, you should feel when power is dropping.

In a Scoob 1.6s 60ft times would be the target.
Interestingly trick tyres do not always help - they can actually be slower as they have no temperature in them.
Bottom line though is as P20SPD states - the driver can make a huge difference - even in a high grip four wheel drive car. Gearshifts on the strip alone can be up to one second difference between drivers.

To give you a clue BOB, i dont think i have ever achieved a 1.6s 60ft, ever. What i lose in 60ft time, i seem to make up in gear changes.
Rannoch would consistently get low 1.7s or 1.6s 60ft times in his sti5, yet when he sold it to Mark, and i ultimately drove it, the best i have managed is 1.8's on occassion, yet i have run the 1/4 roughly a second quicker than Rannoch (sorry David )
The tyres for both drivers were bridgstone SO's.
Rannoch (grey car) launching with a low 1.7/high 1.6 60ft time. (Red one is me in my own car).

Then compare to me drivng the same car, a year later, 1.9 60ft, but faster gear changes.

Major differences in technique . Now if only i could launch like Rannoch

Thats all well and good but people will be dissapointed if they start chasing their 60fts as most wont have the 'gadgets' that Paul and Andy use. I managed 1.67s, 1.67s and 1.69s last weekend but not on my quickest runs. I was giving it some stick though and a std box wouldnt be happy.
I think 1.8s is good and 1.7s v good. Those would be more sensible targets imo.

I know Bob, all i am saying is, its achievable.
Personally, any 60ft in the 1.6's mark is bloody good, i only wish i could get close.
What tends to happen, is as you get a good launch, your brain thinks, "ooohh, that was good" thus taking concentration off the rest of the run.
At the bruntingthorpe event, i got a stunning launch with the DJ01's on, but in doing so, killed the clutch, and knacked the rest of the run.
Its finding that perfect run

1.609 was achieved by that hooligan Stef at Santa Pod in his humble UK Classic with decat and induction kit.... on standard road tyres! NO JOKE!!!
There is always the exception to the rule....... but I wouldnt mind seeing him in a Scoob with over 500bhp!
Regards,
Shaun.

I went down the strip for the first time @ Santa Pod
Best run was.
60ft 1.801
12.506 @ 108mph
Quite happy with that for my first time and sure I could improve.
Car is a V2 sti BTW.

Stupid question time, but did your 60ft times come down when you added more power (for those that have done so), or does the extra power not realy come into effect until later down the strip?
