After all those 10000's of songs he was bound to pick a couple of bands that took off, hardly a cure for cancer or world peace.

Was just about to reply saying anyone could sift through a load of "new" bands, and through the law of averages could *discover* bands who would be successful. You beat me G00ner!
His show was absolutely terrible and many of the tracks he played were ear piercingly awful. To pine on about how he discovered this and that and to forget about the truely awful crap he polluted the airwaves with is tragic.
Some people should get their heads out of their @rseholes.

I dont think that it is 'cool' to like John Peel now; I think that it is informed to appreciate the substantial difference (massively disproportionate, when you consider that he was a DJ) that this man has made to popular music. Slating him because you didnt like what you heard on his show in 1999 or 2004 is ridiculous and misses the point spectacularly..... Without John Peel the music that we listen to now would be quite different, and not for the better.

He was a dj. I dont agree that he made a great influence on the music we listen to. he didnt create any other genres, he played what he thought was good, but so do other dj's other stations. If the world was full of bands each sounding the same as the last it would be a great shame.

The point is that JP was instrumental in breaking so many bands who are regarded pivotal. When you look at these bands its like a list of who mattered in contemporary music of the last 30+ years. I cant imagine what we'd be listening to now without them. I think that John Peel would be embarrassed to be described as being so influential/important; but Im sure that he was. After he died the list of artists who said that JP either inspired them, or more importantly, was responsible for their success (or frequently both) was massive. Its true that as a DJ he didnt create any of the music that Im referring to, of course he didnt. You might even argue that he could only influence a bands commercial sucess, but if thats right then without him (the bands themselves said) they wouldnt have been heard, successful, or likely to continue... Musical genius that never gets past an eight-track doesnt make much difference does it?
