I pulled up at the traffic light next to an old 318 the other day who had his fog lights on (along with the chavvy blue sidelights). I put my window down and told him having his fog lights on would not make his car go any faster or get him laid.

The lights changed and I left him standing, so I proved my point

Whereas having a scoob without fog lights on is, while certainly faster, still aint gonna get you laid

Potentially, yes ! The headlight of a car is designed to aim the beam down at the road and slightly to the left (in the UK). This alignment is checked and adjusted at the MOT to ensure it is safe and within legal guidelines. There is no obligation to have the fogs alignment checked, and they have no specific regulation for their construction and usually have optical reflectors of very poor quality. They are usally mounted on flimsy trim, which over time or following impact will deflect them from their original aim. They are fitted more as a styling statement than for function or safety, and the vast majority of their use is for the same reason. There is also a law which states that it is illegal to have lights emmitiing more than 110W from the front of any vehicle on a lit highway unless in exceptional circumstances (ie. fog). Also, due to their positioning low down on the vehicle, the lights are more likely to reflect off of a wet surface, doubling their potential to dazzle. The whole point of them is to illuminate the central white line and verge, and a short distance in front at ground level where the warmth of the ground lifts the fog slightly, allowing reasonably safe progress in dangerous conditions. In any other condition they are relatively useless and inherantly dangerous. Their use is illegal, so get used to it, grow up and show some consideration and respect for others. Who knows, one day someone may show a little back

Do you generally wear a condom if you're not gonna **** ?
Do you generally use your windscreen wipers when it's perfectly dry ?
Do you generally use your foglights when it hasn't been foggy for months ?

If you answered yes to any of the above, then I repeat, you are a TW@T !

Zzzzz... Let's face it, there's not much of an arguement against them, assuming they're properly adjusted etc.

So, it comes down to personal preference. I, for instance, think carbon fibre bonnets look bad, however I appreciate that others like the way they look.

That's fine, each to their own and I won't be calling those people names.

So, let's have some photographic evidence or something to show how 'normal' fog lights dazzle.

I don't get dazzled by other people's fog lights, hence I'm kinda amused by the level of hatred being shown here.

Why not worry about something worth worrying about?

And it also makes me laugh when people give the legal arguement. Glass house stone throwing.

Or are you suggesting that you never break the law? Don't make me laugh.

My car is nine months old, with no damage at all. I have no alignment issues.

And the power of the bulbs is more than 110W? I have no idea, but I very much doubt they're more powerful than main beam.

Some physics to back this up please. Whereas the reduction in incidence angle may increase the amount of reflected light, the reflected angle will itself be small therefore any reflected light will be lower than that from, say, dipped beam at the same distance.

I'm not sure they are 'inherently' dangerous. Maybe 'potentially' would be a better choice of words to say what I think you're trying to, but 'dubiously' would be better.

Absolutely, they come on automatically when I use the screen wash.

Doesn't matter if it's been foggy or not.

They are for use in low visibility conditions when slow speed is already necassary.

Not for idiots to drive around pretending they are 'Driving or Spot' lights.

And NO, I don't care if I don't put gloves in my Glove box, Ash in my Ashtray or Boots in My Boot. I still only use foglights in Fog.

Big hammer through the lense is my advise,

Anyone got Ru's car parkaddress???

People driving with their fog lights on has never irritated me half as much as it seems to have done some people posting on here. I have never felt put in 'danger' by apparently dazzling fog lights. It's one of these things I never even thought much about until coming across threads like this.

I was in a mates car the other week. We came across a few people coming the other way with fogs on and every time he flashed them repeatedly as they were coming towards him, making angry comments about it etc. I told him to chill out and not let minor things like this wind him up. I also tried to explain to him that the people he was flashing would 99% of the time fail to realise why they were being flashed. I only flash other motorists to let them out of junctions or alert them to a hazard / speed trap I've just gone past etc and thought he should do the same.

He went on for a bit about how these people are complete "****'s" etc. After a while silence. Then a couple of minutes later I had to remind him to flick full beam off for a car coming the other way. I have to admit, I was thinking to myself - who's the **** now mate.

Is this thread a symptom of the nanny state?

Im well Ru, yourself? Glad to see your comments are factual as ever

Personally, Im not ranting on about the 'supposed' dangers of being blinded etc.

I just think they are behaving like antisocial to$$ers, and there is no justification, unless you make one up.

I'm fine thanks.

Any idea what else we can debate? I'm a bit tired with this front fog light thing.

How about people smoking whilst driving, or maybe having a conversation with a passenger. Sounds a bit dangerous to me.

I often do both, so if you want to take the opposing view that's cool...

Don't get me started - supermarket check-out queue people who are always surprised to be asked for money when they've had all their shopping scanned.

People who just stop for no reason when walking along the pavement.

It makes me sooo mad...

I can if you want

Just don't throw your lit ***-end but out the window, you dirty git!
Or dont tell me you don't put ash in your ash tray???

Escallator rage??? Is there such a thing?

The Tube train is there and waiting with the doors open, and some twit, who has no intention of getting it, is walking down the middle of the escallator at JUST ENOUGH speed so that you miss it.

These days I just buy a First Class ticket so I don't have to worry about rushing to get a seat on the train.

Also agree with 'meadering' and stopping people who have no idea of people around them.

Actually I've never put ash in the ashtray; that's what the window's for...

How about those travelators things at airports? Okay, you don't need to walk along them but in that case stand to one f'ing side!

People who don't thank you after you've let them in. You've just done them a favour and they don't even bother to acknowledge it with a friendly wave or flash etc. That makes me angry

People who queue jump. Two lanes got to go into one. Most people indicate and move into the one lane in plenty of time. Some **** blasts pasts and forces his way in right at the end

People who sit in the middle lane on the motorway absolutely oblivious to all the flashes coming from behind and the rolling road block they are causing

People who sit in the fast side of the dual carriage way 'overtaking' cars in the left lane at exactly +1 mph, refusing to pull in for you so that you can blast past

People who think Speed Cameras are NOT about raising revenue

People who don't let you in/out etc. in traffic!

People who don't indicate - come on, how hard is it to move that little lever and let others know your intentions!

People driving with rear fogs lights on when it's not foggy (ooooh - contraversial!)

People driving with no lights in poor visibility.

People indicating right to go straight on across a mini roundabout.

People bashing my car with their door in car parks.

Slow f'ers in my way.

Even slower f'ers just around the corner after overtaking the above.

Even slower slower f'ers just around the next corner after overtaking the above.

People coming the other way and spoiling the racing line.

Grrrrr!

Bascially I'm just as much of a road-**** as the next person, lol. These days though I don't get worked up about it. Much. Well, not as much as I used to!

Cyclists.

Cyclists who refuse to wear helmets, even though they're not a requirement they are a good idea.

Cyclists who have no lights when it's dark (this will get more common as winter ensues).

Horse riders. As bad as cyclists in every respect, and they're usually twelve and think they own the road.

People who use their front fog lights when it's not foggy

People who use their rear foglights when it's not foggy.

Poor lane discipline.

Poor indication.

Poor driving in general, I say make the test much harder and retest every 10 years. Maybe even a mini test every time you accrue any points.

Slow drivers.

Traffic cops.

Speed camera's.

Politicians.

Canvas callers.

Smokers.

Irresponsible parents.

Jamie Cullum.

Car thieves.

People who'll blame anyone except themselves, even when they're completely to blame.

Managers who can't manage to wipe their own @rses, let alone run a company (hence why I'm going self employed soon).

I could go on......
