I have the utmost respect for his skill and bravery, took something pretty special to be able to do that. As was said, it will eventually catch up with you though. If he did get killed I regret it.

Wonder if UB could be persuaded to have a go-he's out there somewhere!

Nope sorry, do stuff like that, taking massive risks with your life, you are a dick, life is precious and thousands of people dont take stupid risks but still end up dead via disease or accident, its up to him but any sane person would asses the risks and history of free climbing and decide that its a stupid sport full of gonzo, 'radical dude' nutters. Maybe he wanted to die as I cannot see any other reason to do it, we all enjoy a bit of excitement but thats just mental. As for skill and bravery, bravery is sometimes just a more postive way of saying stupid, as for skill, he cant have been that skilled as he would have still been with us despite the most impressive video.

As for GC8's comments, I wouldnt worry about it, its fairly ineviatble, I have never seen a Free Climbing or Base Jumping documentary that doesnt have the obituries at the end. Besides, you contradict yourself, expressing sorrow at the fact he had died after saying that all free climbers get killed participating in the sport.

I have sympathy for his friends and relatives and I am not saying that nobody should take risks, society is built by risk takers, I dont think anybody should take stupid uneccessary risks.

I can just imagine the thoughts racing through your head as you fall off doing something like that, bollocks, bollocks bollocks, was wondering when this might, hap....

Fully expect a flaming but people die everyday through no fault of their own, kids as well, this guy fell off doing something incredibly risky that nobody made him do, people get massacred, earthquakes happen and so do Tsunamis, I will reserve my sorrow for those people.

After reading the title of this thread I was expecting a different sort of video

Certainly impressive tho, and seems he didnt die climbing, but 'free jumping' off the Leaning Tower. 2 ropes rubbed causing one to break, and he fell to his death.

He'd not long before said he was planning on giving up the extreme stuff to spend more time with his family and stuff, but seems the grim reaper caught up with him first.

These people at the top end of the sport must have some serious mental imbalance. Its now a game of one-upmanship, where they have to do more and more ridiculous stunts to gain kudos amongst their peers, it has to be, I can't see any other motive. Just look at that Jackass crap on TV, says it all.

That guy in the vid, he took what is already an dangerous pastime...rock climbing to the next level by binning the rope. Then the silly **** went and did it against the clock . Ok, he made the climb, but he only had a 50% chance of making it alive, rock climbing is one of 2 things...you either don't fall off, or you do. So for him to reduce his 50% chance of staying on by timing himself is lunacy. It's glamourised suicide, maybe I should feel sorry for him after all?

Hi mate. Not into it, but lived in a ski resort for 2 years and did some pretty "interesting" read stupid skiing - deep powder, 2 avalanches later, small cliff jumps etc etc. I just recognise that need to do something, well, a little bit dangerous. In some people it really is their catalyst for a fulfilling life. I have HUGE respect for any "extreme" athlete as they not only have to be fit, strong etc but operate at a danger level we can barely comprehend.

Fair play, but there is a big difference between going off piste and radical free climbing. I can see where these people derive the buzz from, but at what risk???

As far as I am concerned, ( and this is the bit you need to read, because I am usually right ) is these people, like the guy in the vid, are just playing with death, nothing more, or less.

I can appreciate how fit/strong the guy was, but that just makes it more of a waste, all that effort he put in to get there, just mad. I have kids and I would be pretty upset if they started doing stuff like that, all the time/money/love spent bringing them up and they decide to play Russian Roulette, ending up as a talking point on a car bulletin board.

Would be interested to see what a psychologist said about this type of person, there was a kid at school who for attention would eat all manner of stuff, insects, *** ends etc, what I am getting at is did the guy do this for the buzz and the challenge or to get the admiration.

Agreed.
For some people "a little bit dangerous" is as much as crossing a busy street, bareback sex, rollercoaster rides etc.
for him it was doing what was in the vid.
You cant deny him his lifestyle choices, it was what quickened him, no dissimilar to taking a chunk of metal on wheels down a "twisty" road.
Granted the odds are somewhat shorter with his pursuit, but the basic principle is the same.
We all need to do things that make us feel alive, everyone does to varying degrees, this guy was at the top end of things he "had" to do.
One thing I am pretty certain of, if he were alive, he wouldnt care that a bunch of keyboard warriors on a car bbs were calling him names becuase they didnt approve.
Have some respect, the man's dead ffs.

Without wanting to be too flippant, I think you'll find this rule applies to ALL human beings, you and me included.

But as for pushing the envelope, I think jumping with both hands for a crack 250ft+ up is really busting the entire reinforced Jiffy bag.
