BTW, in light of the "public road" comments above - if he doesn't pay, say you'll shop him for driving without insurance

All good and well but the owner/keeper will be charged with cause and permit to drive without insurance unless the driver stole it!

OK, here's where we are now. And thanks for the replies btw.

I've sourced a decent door, and the repairers are going to get us a sill, or part of one. The old door is too badly bashed to reskin and would have cost double the replacement price, to do.

The door was £70, but is a minter, so no probs there, wrong colour, but unmarked, just been to Donny to fetch it.

Labour costs will be £400, paint and parts about £90, so all in, around the £500 mark.

Now all I have to do is talk to the kid and his dad when my idiot gets home after work tonite

For the record, no way are we claiming on insurance no matter what. He's trying to build a ncd, although how long it will last at this rate, is anybody's guess

The lad driving has passed his test about 6 months, has his own car with fully comp, whuich gives him Ok to drive another car on third party AFAIK. Still not claiming though, even if there WAS a (legal) way.

your son had to make an evasive manouver to avoid the oncoming car, he feared for his life so swurved and braked heavily, and it crashed into a side wall, causing the damage.

report it to the police provide documents, provide details of the other car and that it failed to stop, be vague on car details.

they will provide you with a crime reference number, contact insurance. voila.

I would never condone such behaviour, and would suggest against this

good luck

That is not to be done

If the lad who dinged the car doesnt offer to pay, he's not a very good mate in my opinion.

You've already said your not going the insurance route so this doesn't really matter but....IIRC

The 3rd party cover your sons mate has when driving a borrowed vehicle does not cover damage to the said vehicle, it only covers damage to another party were he to hit them whilst driving the borrrowed vehicle.

For the sum of money involved I would expect the guy to pay up. I have seen something similar happen where the value of the car (a write off) was in excess of £10k, this can be a little more tricky to deal with.

Sounds to me if all parties should have learnt a very good lesson at an early stage and without to much damage to their wallets

Highly unlikely if he's under 25. The policy normally has a statement excluding it.

yep, simple case of
"who ever bends it, mends it" - you'll soon see how good a "mate" this chap is to your son......

I'd make them pay half each - to teach the mate a lesson in looking after other peoples property, and not driving like a dick in a car that isnt yours, and to teach your son not to let his nobber mates drive his car around car parks at night trying to do donuts and impress young girls.

This man speaks the truth.

Also, are Tesco claiming for barriers?

I don't think so, they moved out about 5 years ago to a larger store.
