Thats the one, but it says that the most optimistic estimates are 30-40 years. It was probably the most depressing article I have ever read. By then it will be so expensive that life as we know it will be completely different thats for sure!

No, that's the point, as of today, they estimate they can keep pumping at todays rate for 30-40 years before they start to run out. What also tends to happen each year is they find new reserves and new ways of getting more out of existing wells before they have to shut them down, so you may find that next year the reserves actually INCREASE to 35-45 years for example.

So in short, don't panic too much, but don't waste (any) resources either!

But reserves are just estimates are they not.

And didn't Shell recently get into a heap of bother for dramatically over-stating their "reserves". Given the nature of the Oil Companies you would think that they would "tend" to overstate rather than understate their reserves.

Oh absolutely they are estimates, if we knew exactly how much oil there was left in total, then there wouldn't be half the arguments about it all. Of course, even if we knew now, that wouldn't allow for new technologies coming along that would allow us to get to oil we currently can't. TBH I don't think oil will effectively run out while I am still on the planet.

I'll go down as loser number 3 if you like Pete. I maybe better off than 8 years ago but thats despite of this govt not because of. We will all lose when this govts bad manangement comes to haunt the whole economy. When this happens it matters little how sensible/clever the individual has been the suffering will be for all.

After all the sh8te I read on this bbs its nice to see there are plenty who see this govt for what they are. Tax and then spend our money on crap.

The only upside of this downturn will be that Brown will be PM and so will be directly responsible for it. I just hope we have an opposition that can take advantage of it, and I hope they steer right of centre.

I don't know about you but I'd like to see a country of low tax, small govt, less concerned with meddling around the world, strict on crime and immigration. Rewarding hard work and letting lazy ******* rot!!

Have said it for a long time now - worst thing NL ever did was artificially supressing the interest rates, now we're stuck with the results - housing market teetering on the edge, consumer borrowing at the highest rate ever, add this to rising unemployment and the amount of companies bailing out of the UK for India and its pretty clear cut.

Manufacturing went a long time ago, service industry is all we have left, as you say, that's fast disappearing too.

How have they done this? The rate is set by the Bank of England, not the government.

Come on Olly there's so much more we're better at now.

1. Sucking up to our greatest Ally for **** all return
2. Starting Illegal Wars
3. Giving money to prisoners for messing up their human rights
4. Protecting child murders from the baying evil general public
5. Spending Billions extra on the NHS and at the same time spending Billions with Private companies to build hospitals so they can lease them back to us
6. Spending billions on new roads so we can put more scameras to generate more money for the Police State
7. Intoduced draconian new laws so we can prevent pensioners from shouting "Nonsense"
8. Introduced a shoot to Kill policy for Terrorists that have resulted in one dead electrician and 4 terrorists in custody (awaiting payment from 3 above no doubt)
9. Spending Billions on Education whist seeing 102% of all pupils gaining 15 o Levels each
10. Improved convistions for serious crimes (Speeding, Council tax evasion etc)

I'm sure there's more ...

Yes, I am worse off.

I didn't have to bother working 8 years ago.

I got chauffeured around by my personal drivers.

Also I had the benefits of a Conservative government giving me FREE university enducation and few grand beer money as a grant for the trouble.

Beer was £1.40 a pint too

I'm not worse off.....but that is only because I have changed jobs twice for better pay each time.

But I'm not any better off!!!!

Every time this has happened I have thought my quality of life would improve but it hasn't...it's like treading water.. It must be horrendous if you have been in the same job for the last few years. The only people who seem to be able to drink, eat junk food, afford SKY, Smoke and have all the latest gadgets seem to live on council estates. Is there an application form I can fill in?

I earn a decent wage but can't keep up with those who live on benefit

CLS, the problem goes deeper. You and I may try to save money for pensions to help us later in life. The govt has a double whammy for us. Firstly it has all but buggered any tax incentives on those. Secondly it has 'encouraged' working people to borrow money on the equity in their houses to spend on cars/holidays. These people will have no savings or pension, then you and I will pay for their care when they have no funds come 65.
You and I didn't buy the latest plasma 42inch tv, 4x4, etc, but we will in the long run pay for many who did. If you see what I mean?

Do we really need to be a race whereby you earn more or own more than your neighbour... That's all people seem to think about these days.
What happened to being "happy with your lot".
Drink to excess
Eat to excess
Waste, waste, waste.

Just a point but most people will be better off anyway. They've had a few years to 'climb the ladder', pay off loans, build a home etc. The REAL question is: Is a 30 (apply to any age group) year old now better off than a 30 year old 10 years ago.

No I don't think anybody thinks that, oil is a finite resource. We won't however actually use all of what there is on the planet, because the last few thousand barrels or whatever will just be too damn expensive to extract.

Yes we will have to go Solar / Nuclear / Wind / Tidal powered, and probably fuel cell and various other technologies in due course.

Nope...Have seen the stupid prices of property recently??? There's no way in hell I'm am paying £150K for a damp ridden extended 2up 2 down terrace with no offroad parking and the bathroom behind the kitchen situated in the midst of scumville. Some people might see that as a rung onto the property ladder, I say they are buying into negative equity Renting is for losers, we all know that though (unless your a landlord - kerching )

Yes...I own a car, one of those ****ty chav cars that seem poulular on this BBS. Worth about £6200 according to glasses. Wooo, I have to thank Gordon for that.

If only you knew LOL I was entitled to grant money, like everyone else under the fabulous conservative government. A wise short term investment to provide another upstanding hard worker ready to pay the coffers a lifetime of tax - much wiser than paying all the dole wallowers, 15year old mothers of four kids and immigrants in masses of benefits over a long term under NL policy - don't you agree?
Ah, lets also look at current pitiful excuses of students we now have in this day and age...letting any old thick skulled imbicile into universities to make up numbers, all studying loser courses at ex-polytechnics with zero job prospects and racking up ££££££s in debt as they sit in the SU bar trying to make a 1/2 pint of shandy last a whole lunch hour. Bitter?? No. Thankful, that I had the chance to study in an education system that still worked, in which industry could accept the listed qualifications for what they meant - intelligence. Not just a worthless piece of paper stating whatever Mickey Mouse degree the modern feejit has attained. Still, your Disney Degree wouldn't matter, seeing that most sectors "where the money is" has all moved overseas to maintain financial viability. All thanks to Mr Brown undermining it all.

We'll never run out of oil, not in the foreseeable future (1000+ years)

It is a media creation, much like the bird flu pandemic which will hit Britain.
