Are you 100% sure the cam timing is correct ?
Hows the oil pressure when the oil is hot ?
As Steven suggests, check that you can't push the tensioner back by hand.

used my 93 tensoiner and it took some push to get it back in .
cam timming set dead on the marks with the lines on the belt spot on .
not sure about oil pressure not got a gauge

I'm no mechanical expert but you asked me to comment. I wonder about the origins of the heads and the short motor. If a new short motor (especially with good oil pressure) I think it is unlikely to be big end bearings, or piston noise. But I would take the effort to get an oil pressure reading before pulling the engine. It doesn't sound particularly like det either given it is on light load and doesn't spike.
STI 3 heads are now quite old, and it may well be a noise from them unless you know the heads are good and that nothing was disturbed whilst fitting.
I would also confirm the noise levels with det cans as well as a knocklink using a separate knock sensor.

could this be a dodgy piston? noise is top end noise well the noise you can hear? depends if that is what causing the knock display activity.
