Not heard about the Birmingham riots this week – that’s just a very small taster of what's to come.
Enoch Powell made the same point in 1968. He called for an immediate reduction in immigrants on the grounds that their numbers would become overwhelming and suggested that those already relocated in England should be repatriated.

He claimed that the the immigrant communities would organise to consolidate their members, to agitate and campaign against their fellow citizens, and to overawe and dominate the rest.

But that hasn't happened. Britain has NOT been taken over, nor have there been any rivers of blood. Look back at history and you'll see that there was a good deal more social unrest in the Victorian age than there is now. Riots were not at all uncommon, and in history have always occurred where there is poverty and social deprivation.

Enoch Powel was misguided and mistaken, but he was also one of the cleverest men you could ever have met. Given that even he got it wrong, what makes you think that your not-especially-well-considered position is anything other than naive and simplisitic at best, and xenophobic at worst?

I don't know very much about Enoch Powel. I am just going off what I've experienced first hand and what I see happening in countries like Denmark. By the sounds of it, his theories could still be proven right in the future by the way, still too early to tell, especially with this radical Muslim element. Just for the record though, and it's a shame I feel I need to say this, this isn't a 'racist' argument. I am just acknowledging that there are problem with mass immigration in this country that simply aren’t being addressed. I really don't think it can be argued that everything is going to plan here.

This chav / hip-hop sub-culture that has developed is my biggest concern. I can understand if people have lived in nice areas and can't relate to it, but there is a nasty undercurrent to society that again simply isn't being addressed. People’s lives are literally being made a misery by these types and the powers don't seem to exist to be able to do something about it. Voter apathy is a problem too. I always vote, but what type of democracy is this where less than half bother, probably because they feel disillusioned. BBC isn't even impartial anymore.

I does bother me when I speak to my Dad and other older generations and they tell me how things used to be in their day - not like how it is now. Maybe I am a bit xenophobic or whatever the latest buzz word is for anybody not buying into the government line, but then changes certainly aren’t always for the best.

I'll happily admit that some of the posts in this thread have got me thinking and good to hear your views.

Yes the fabled good old days. Outside toilets, a very well defined class structure, glass ceilings for all women (if not stuck at home), men not of a higher class. Very limited access to higher education, vast government monopolies for all services, massive amounts of poverty etc etc. Not to mention the many benefits to living in the present.

I'm very happy to be living in the time and place that I am. Think most people who hark for some previous golden age would **** their pants if they found themselves there and living it.
