Fair do's.

I'm sure we both agree that Ginger Baker is among the the greatest rock drummers of all time. The effortless poly rhytms and 'conversations' he sets up between diffent parts of the kit and the other two musicians (Clapton and Bruce) is unequalled by anyone else.

In fact now I think about it, the better the drummer the more effortless his playing seems. All this blood vessels sticking out, eyes bulging, whack 'em really hard stuff doesn't convince me at all.

The only time I've seen Ginger Baker is in his stint with Masters of Reality and yes the guy could groove. Wouldn't profess to being a fan as I just don't know his work well enough.

Mind you, he's a man after my own heart - two bass drums and not afraid to use them!

Trying to define who's the best drummer is pretty stupid. Obviously depends on what flicks your switch.

I love and play metal above all else so I get much more of a kick out of hearing fast double-bass work with solid groove than some pretentious avant-garde jazz brushwork. The greatest drummer I've ever seen was probably Raymond Herrera from Fear Factory - amazing technique, perfect time-keeping and did not make a single mistake all night (I was listening very closely ).

For those unfamiliar with any of Buddy Rich, have a look at these downloads:

Neil Peart is not bad but he has admitted to being hopless at maintaining a constant beat for too long hence his slightly rambling style.

Rock drummers not sure Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham all contenders
OK, can go with Buddy rich. Was just going on Rock orientated stuff and 'still playing' when thinking of the response. You forgot Ian Paice (in the 70's) for time and fills. Had to be better than Bonham. Bonham hit the drums hard and I thought that was about it. (Am taking cover now )
Pearts drumming isnt really about a 4/4 beat though is it.

Bonham probably had the best right foot of his era - check out his footwork in the break towards the end of 'When the Levee Breaks', great stuff. So yeah, he did more than just hit drums hard!

OH completley forgot about Paice Good one and yes much more "subtle" than Bonham.

Didnt Say Peart was no good and definitley never 4/4 saw him at least twice i just think he can ramble abit too much in the back ground.

Drummers are there essentially to maintain the Beat and there are loads of unsung ones who do just that

And there's me thinking you'd kicked off a discussion thread that has attracted a few percussion enthusiasts.

As scoobynet goes this is a well mannered thread

He was 12, and I have a CD of it. His name's Tony Royster Jnr.

My seven year old's a bit of a whiz for his age. I might try and get a little vidclip of him and post it tomorrow.

In total agreement there UB

All you who doubt John Bonham, check out Moby Dick on The Song Remains The Same

Keith Moon has to take the crown as the nutter's nutter though

IIRC didn't the guy,who was Animal, now deceased RIP end up in the Skinnerettes?

I always liked Guns n Roses original drummer, Steven Adler's performances too. Matt Sorum may be better technically, but he ain't got no soul.

Yup & yup. Chad S. actually amazed me after I saw their live DVD's. That guy is so damn good. And then there's Flea.

Stewart Copeland felt so refreshing in the 70's. I bought the "So Lonely" single purely because of his drumming. Ugh, I'm old.

I've been a fan of Neil Peart for about 25 years and bash the skins a bit myself. My current fave drummer is Gavin Harrison of Porcupine Tree. he does some very complex & technical stuff but makes it sound simple and not invasive like many do.

Seen Virgil Donati at a Paiste drum clinic (turned up wearing a Zildjian t-shirt, tee hee ) - there no doubting his technical prowess but he just doesn't groove IMO.

Problem is with sites like Drummerworld is that you check all the vids and you ended up thinking you can't play at all compared to some of the monsters on there (which, to be fair, you can't).

Joey Jordison is one of my favourite drummers of recent years along with Daniel Erlandsson (Arch Enemy), Matt McDonough (Mudvayne) and Mike Wengren (Disturbed).

What counts is not whether you can play a million notes per second but whether you can create a memorable drum part that enhances a song. And if you can't, then you're not much cop, as with any instrument.
