Agree though that there are huge areas of crossover where it's difficult to argue that something is absolutely soul/jazz/funk/blues etc. R&B used to refer to something between blues and soul. It was generally performed by African-American performers in the fifties; the first version that we heard in the UK was early Rolling Stones cover versions (Little Red Rooster?).

As with many areas of language where descriptions are inflated and no longer mean what they used to (eg. graduate ) R&B has now become a debased description. Destiny's Child are described as R&B; the correct description is pop shyte.

Funny you should mention "Angels" Doug as a local "blues" band (big shout to Squeek) has a nasty habit of playing that infernal song..although he refuses to sing the "through it all" line because he can't hit the high note
