I can't remember which one it was - but it wasn't the one in your picture - yours looks much better - so It could do a better job

As a rough rule of thumb it takes the average person 1 hour to break down 1 unit of alcohol. 1 unit = 1 measure of 40% ABV spirits, 1 half pint of lager or 1 glass of wine IIRC.
One 70CL bottle of spirits contains 28 standard measures (when I last worked in a bar!) therefore if you split a bottle with your mate at night, you'll not be clear for a good 14 hours.
Coffee does not sober you up and the best thing to do if you are wanting to work off the influence is to stay awake as your metabolic rate remains high.
Best not to chance it as some livers can be worse at processing toxins than others.

Seriously I think it is a bit unwise to take what the machine says as gospel unless you are able to get it calibrated precisely. If the reading is anywhere close to 0.7 you would be risking your licence to drive in case you are stopped. Who can say how precise the police breathalisers are anyway. Its the blood test that matters. Everyone has a different metabolism as well when it comes to dealing with clearing alcohol out of the body.
SBradley's bottle to throttle example is a very good one, I can back all that up too.

out of interest, would an alcoholics body over the course of years break down the alcohol/absorb it quicker? say at year 1 where he would fail a test an hour after a drinking session, would at year 10 this be reversed. ie pass ? or would the organs be damaged and the test reversed, producing a failed result for more hours after the booze sesh.
