I would love to see anybody give conclusive evidence that it did - it would make a great story.

There was a big debate about it about 5 years ago!
My mates car was one affected by it!
His engine went bang with the build up of detergents and poor quality fuel. He used to use only Supermarket fuels!

This performance fuel has the highest octane rating (RON) of any petrol currently on sale at UK forecourt chains and contains an enhanced additive package to help remove engine deposits and ensure smooth engine running.
Surely this makes it almost as good as Optimax on cleaning and better on performance .

Aren't these points-of-interest just brilliant?! 2mins to download, unpack, transfer to my Palm and open TomTom to see it had all my local Tesco99's on it.
Did 100 miles of tracktime at the Bruntingthorpe trackday on Tesco99 in my WRX and it was sweet all day. Pal with a 320bhp RA who normally uses Optimax tried it for the first time also on Saturday; he found less knocklink activity than the usual for Optimax, and was happy with the way it built up to 1.4bar on the road. All good, and this concurs with Gerry (Houghton)'s careful observations of behaviour on Tesco99.
cheers

The fact is that all of these sites have a very large turn over in fuel
and they are able to buy it cheaper and pass that on to the consumer.
You do your shopping and fill up your car.
You can't honestly believe that they sell it cheap so as to attract customers
into the store.

From what I've seen on my travels, supermarket fuel is priced similarly to their local competition. The only time it's significantly cheaper is when they have their 5p off(ers)

Some supermarket filling stations make a profit, others dont. The 24hr Tesco in Abbeydale in Sheffield was easily the cheapest supplier of diesel over the last 12 months, but the Tesco in Chesterfield which is about 8 miles away was 5p per litre dearer. The Chesterfield store was following local price whilst the Sheffield store was aggresively undercutting its local competition. Its difficult to know which one actually made Tesco the most money, but the one that made the least, maybe even made a loss, will have added to the companys volume and its quantity (and the buying power that it provides) that dictates whether the company ultimately make money by selling petrol. Im sure that they do though...
