I saw and recorded the fifth gear programme and will be uploading the short video clip about the fuel tests to my website for other peoples future reference. It was something I was interested to know about seeing how the nearest Petrol station to me is BP and the nearest shell is about 20 miles out of my way. (round trip)

We don't have Tesco 99 but I'd have liked to have know how it compared in case we end up having it locally.

Surely there are too many variables to be able to compare two different cars?

Was the car running 99, running 95 before and the ECU had not re-learnt how to use the new fuel?
What was the mileage on either?
Any differing modifications?
What tyre pressures were each car running, as this will affect the calculation for power at wheels figures due to gearbox losses?
What were the power at wheel figures for both cars?
What is significantly higher?
Were there any temperature or humidity differences between the two runs?
Was 99 car warmed up too much and suffering from heat soak?

Etc, etc, etc!

WRONG

There was a small section in last months J Tuner about Tesco 99RON and it stated there that it did contain additives and detergents to keep the engine cleaner, similar to Optimax and Ultimate.

Is this snobbery coming out here??

People try and convince themselves that, somehow, the Tesco petrol 'must' be poor quality as its cheaper!!

Like Tescos jeans at £3 are vastly inferior to Levis!!

Pure name snobbery, thats all it is!!

That's a good point Pete.

I attended a track day that Tesco held the other week and a spokeswoman for Tesco said that they compared the petrol to the rest of the range in the shop i.e value, normal and finest with the 99RON being compared to the finest range. Tesco prices are good as a rule so they shouldn't be thought of as cheap or inferior.

BTW we weren't ragging cars around Tesco car park before some smart a**e decides to ask

Isn't that so true!

A lot of this is snobbery and personal opinions, we all have them and that's what makes life interesting.

I think the only way to settle this arguement would be to contact somebody like which magazine and get them to run a test and publish it.
you'd have it black and white who was the daddy!

start spamming them now!

I think that you'll find there are a couple of magazines doing articles about this subject soon

Hi Martin

As you recall it was me that had the fuel issue with Tesco 99 as per my post http://www.scoobycity.co.uk/wr1/phpB...pic.php?t=2121

Basically 9000miles using Optimax only and I used Tesco 99 for 2 tank fulls and my ignition multiplier was only 13 instead of 16. A reset by Mike Wood from Prodrive did not cure it.

I went back to WRC 4days and 120 odd miles later on fresh Optimax and power was 10bhp higher and the multiplier was at 16. Weather/conditions were the same btw.

I'll now back to Optimax only, but like others said in Tesco's defense, it could have been a duff batch!!!

Can't (yet?) get 99 octane at Tescos here (Stirling). However, my Octavia vRS is now fed on Tescos 97 octane and runs very well - I had it on Star Performances rolling road on Saturday and both bhp and torque are up from previously. Jim from Star was checking the fuelling and asked me "is that Optimax in it?"!

That 9% lager at LIDL's does sound super special, might have to get the paper bag for the head looked out and go and give LIDL's a 2nd chance.
