Personel favs of mine would have to be Joe Satriani the guy is a complete guitarist in every way seen him play live loads of times now and he never ceases to inspire everytime. He was of course teacher to Steve Vai and Kirk Hammet amongst others.
Dave Gilmour is a very moody player I don't think anyone can express so much meaning with a guitar as him, top player.
Agree with the Steve Rothery comments to, Easter is a cracking piece of guitar work, he's a very underestimated player and is often overlooked in guitarists polls etc but he's really up there with the best as far as i'm concerned

Agreed, most mentioned are amazing guitarists, but I'm on about ones that still have control over their bladder.
New Guitarists that are top of their game for me are:
Kyle Cook - Matchbox Twenty
Mark Tremonti - Alter Bridge
Jason Mraz - Solo Artist....not a solo playing guy, but very bluesy/funky live
Ryan Newell - Sister Hazel
these guys have that special something which I believe makes them great. There are a million and one good guitarists out there, but I believe these are top.

Took some time in mentioning but gotta agree with Gilmore, Slash, and for me, Alex Lifeson. Shame we're not on about drums as Neil Peart is in a league of his own (IMHO of course
)

Here are Alter Bridge (Mark Tremonti)...admittedly it's one of their more catchy ones, but you get a taste of Tremonti's 'Shred' style of guitar playing.
