You're quite right. Proper Policing on todays roads is a joke, i.e looking out for bad, inconsiderate driving in general - hence the original subject of this thread.

Did it once, heading down to safffend one night also tring to catch some friends up, motorway fairly quite when i came to a stretch with no traffic, right time to get the foot down, well the motorway still being clear when i came up behind a lone car in the fast lane, gave a quick signal left and went past them, just as i did this on the bridge ahead was a police car, d'oh. Well to say did i slow down?, did i ****, i wasn't going to give them time to join the motorway and catch me.
Luckily never received anything regarding this, a very lucky boy that day.

I was tailgated for about two miles on Saturday by a police car. In a Jag, family with me, hardly crime central

I had a new one yesterday, 4 lane motorway apart from a Rover in lane 3 doing about 75 ish, flashed him and he moved over to lane 2 like a good boy, (I was bored so didn't simply overtake him) Was then amazed to see him in my mirror indicating and moving back out to lane 3. Obviously thought that one's speed determines what lane one should use

The exact reason why 4-lane motorways are not the solution.

On the M5 near Bristol, they have recently added a 4th lane on an uphill section - the idea being (I guess) that lorrys can overtake each other in the two near-side lanes, and the rest of the traffic can carry on at a reasonable pace.

Now, at the bottom of the hill, the nearside lane splits into two - there is an extra lane. There are no signs saying "Crawler Lane" or "For use of really slow lorries only", anyone can use it.

So why is it that hardly anyone does use it?

The middle-laners just stay where they are, and amazingly, so do the majority of lorries!
Now, this wouldn't be so bad if the near-side two lanes merged back into one at the top of the hill.......but they don't. (I assume this is so slow-moving lorries don't have to force their way back into the flow of traffic.) But now, all the middle lane numpties find themselves having traffic to their right trying to merge into their lane, and suddenly they are in the outside lane - with all the resultant hard braking, and sudden lane swapping.

I thought people would get used to the new arrangement, but over a month later nothing has changed. Last week I saw two artics overtaking each other in lanes 2 & 3 (lane 1 clear), and one artic found itself stuck in the outside lane for several hundred yards!

I make equally good progress up the nearside two lanes.

Possibly because we don't have 3-lane motorways!!

(Well, to be strictly accurate - we do have 3-lanes on some motorways, but 95% of our M roads are 2-lanes only)
That's true we just have the problem of idiots sitting in lane 2 blocking the whole road, even worse really. A situation amplified by tesco trucks and the like racing each other, one at 55.8 mph and another at 55.4mph.

You tend to get lured into a false sense of security on a motorway ...but having seen both an oncoming truck shred a tyre which jumped over the central reservation & also an oncoming car plough into the central stone trap & armco ...I now tend to keep as much distance as possible between me & oncoming traffic & use lanes 2 & 3 purely for overtaking ...large chunks of rubber or stones the size of snooker ***** with a closing speed of 100mph+ tend to do a fair bit of damage!
