I don't know where a 2.5" system becomes a restriction but it certainly NOT before the high 300s and could be far higher on a system properly designed for power.
Any supplier who says different to sell an exhaust, is trying to have your pants down and should be named publically. The Scooby community has too many Charlatans.
What I can say for sure is that a good 3" system is not a restriction at around 600bhp and I know this because I have conducted several sets of tests.
I think the APS 3.5" system has more to do with marketing and hype than it has to do with performance and it needs a bit of kidology to warrant the exorbitant price.

Personally, I would go for a good 3" system every time as it is not going to be a restriction at any time if the modding bug takes hold.
As far as I know, the RCMS/Halldor/Gulli car is still on a 3" exhaust at over 700bhp.

I spoke to Graham at TSL Motorsport and he made no attempt at flogging me a big bore system when I enquired about upgrading my 03 STi PPP I was quite prepared to change some of the exhaust componants if it would provide cost effective benefit, but he suggested a re-map using the prodrive system. I'm not after big power gains and certainly not a lot more noise, a torque improvement across the range for a nicer driving car is the important thing for a road car. It's booked in for March!
Assuming it wasn't TSL you spoke to, it's worth giving them a call.

If someone spoke to me like a C**t I wouldn't so much as buy a pint off him, so why would you consider buybing an £800 exhaust (that you don't even need) off someone who treated you similarly....unless you liked being treated mean!

If they are rude/disrespectful to you, go elsewhere- there are plenty of places that will give you sounds advice and be nice in the process. You're an Essex Scooby, get yourself over to Xtreme mate!
