i think the drink as much as you can mentality will be reduced by the later opening times, cou[pled with the fact that if you drink more over a longer period rather than less in a short time, you can end up in a much more mellow state.

Once the initial rush to the pub routine is out of everyones system, the drinking culture should be allot more relaxed

The bulk of the major partying will happen on Friday and Saturday nights. There are already plenty of places where people can drink till the wee small hours if they want to - I can't honestly see what all the fuss is about. The people who want to drink all the time already can - they'll just do it in different places now.

There are far worse things going on in the world that we should be getting angry about IMHO.

Its only moaning bloody England that has got their back up about the extended hours. I think its a good thing, look at the rest of Europe they manage it, so why cant we?

The initial novelty of the idea may cause extra problems, but after that no-one will hardly notice the changes but it means we can stay out late Friday night rather than having to walk home sober at 11:30.

As for the Police moaning about having to have extra officers working later, maybe they should re-deploy some of the waste of time jobs they have officers doing like mobile cameras, traffic cops etc

I don't go to the pubs round my way, so I don't care what time they shut.

It's not a new law that only affects your local pubs though, is it?

Where I lived in Germany, the pubs shut when the last customers left. They very rarely stayed open all night.

Just first hand experience of life mate.

Apparently YOU are the one that knows it all - just like the New Labour no mark politicians that force these ludicrous ideas on the rest of us. Or perhaps you represent the drunken yobs that's 'just having a bit of fun' at everyone else's expense?

No, but then I very rarely go to any pub unless I'm meeting people there. I can count the number of times I've been to a pub in the past year on one hand and in the last six months I've only been to the pub once and that was afternoon/early evening!!!

I was about to make this point - so thanks

Just because a landlord CAN open to all hours, it doesn't means he WANTS to.

Village pubs will certainly become more relaxed... and in town? Well, as said above the fact that you aren't getting turfed out by some knuckle dragging neanderthal at 11:05 should make things more relaxed there as well... I used to hate getting booted out of a pub when we were having a good natter, kind of ruins the atmosphere

I'm starting to get confused. First of all people keep complaining because we're turning into a 'nanny state' and now they're complaining when we're getting more freedom.

This is a bit of a pointless debate TBH. The law is here and, as none of us really have the power to see into the future, we can't do much at all now except wait and see what happens. I'm pretty sure that in around 6 months time both sides will be claiming victory as usual. It's amazing what you can do with statistics....

Yes from what i gather he does. It is in a little room in the hall. Go in and face the far end, lift oval wooden lid and you can just see TB's face printed on the u-bend through the blu-loo water.

Trust me, there is nothing quite as satisfying as 'curling one in on' TB's happy smiling face, well, actually the downloaded aftermath of a ruby is just as good.

You can do the same with Cherrie B but be warned if you are a chap and happen to look down whilst drain ing the weasel then it might just shrink and dissapear.

Time will tell I guess.

What does make me laugh however is the Government saying it's giving punters more flexibility.

I think they mean it's because it'll possibly bring in more revenue.

If flexibility was their motive they wouldn't persecute motorists like they do, surely.

Are the post "throwing out" problems due to closing the pubs at 11 though. I think we are likely to see the same problems but later at night which is even more inconvenient.

Sitting behind a keyboard with your best friend in your hand doesn't really count as life experience, does it?

Don't be such a twit. You know it's a brilliant idea and so do we.
Why don't you just have the courage to admit it??

It's okay to cry though if you want to.

Absolutely right Suresh.

They will have all the flexibilty to get even more pissed and cause even more trouble and closer to the middle of the night too!

The police have all these extra powers so that they can spend all their time checking out the pubs and forgetting about all the burglaries and murders that are going on!

Les,

I'm sorry, but i'm willing to bet good money that you're wrong. Ask the Police what they see as the major contibuting factors to all the nuisnace and trouble you refer to. And the reasons are; a common closing time, and a large number of people in the same place at the same time.

The former of which won't apply now, and the latter of which will be very unlikely to occur. You DO grasp this, right?
