I hope I can reply as I hardly have any posts (following that logic we would all be fools when we first started posting). Anyway back to the beginning most manufacturers will make recommendations for car parts, consumables, etc that fit the 'normal' circumstances anticipated for the car.
Just some clear answers I'm after, In cold whether is it 'better' to go for a different oil like 0 - 40w rather than say 10 - 30w?
Just in case (sigh). 'Better' for me = 'Is more likely to give the engine less wear and give it a longer life'

0W is too thin for an Impreza Turbo engine ... Subaru refused warranty claims if this oil was found to have been used.
If you are changing your Oil in the Autumn, and then again in the spring, I guess it could make sense to use 5W/30 in Autumn and then switch to 10W/40 in Spring??
Personally, I just stick with the recommended 10W/40 all year round like most people - not many have any issues with that.
