My advice would be to buy a Model Year 2000 standard UK spec. for £6000 and spend £1000 on Insurance.

That would be a steal to say the least. A good clean, nice, worth owning one, without loads of miles will cost more.

Nope the 99/00 got improved again from the 97/98 models. They're the best classic to go for imo.

Mine's a MY00 and is one of the truly genuine, mint examples out there. Currently up in the for sale section on here. Had a fair bit of interest so far but mostly from timewasters. When buying or selling though it's all about whether someone wants to pick one up cheap and risk problems/not have a great example or if someone's prepared to dig a little deeper but have the knowledge they're going to have as good an example as they could have got. Horses for courses.

What were the other differences then ? the 97/98 got the white dials and nicer interior and external styling is the same as the 99/00 models ? did they change anything else on them as AFAIK the mechanics are all the same ?

As far as I know the MY99 had a slight power increase. 4 pot brakes were one of the biggest changes. It changed styling wise too. A new front bumper, grill and headlights, new rear spoiler, new Sigma alarm.

Then the MY00 was given variable timing on the intermittent wash wipe, new style 16" alloys, colour coded mirrors and door handles, diff stlye fascia on the dash (more metallicy), map reading lights and a new gear ****.

So all in all def quite a lot of changes over the 97/98 models and the reason why the MY00 is the best classic model you can get outside of a special edition in my opinion!

Whatever that GC8 moron Simon says ................... we have a 2000 UK Impreza Turbo in Silver with 50,000miles on it for £6500 where I work!!

It is not the hideous Bug-Eye monstrosity either!

Absolutely spot-on there!!

The MY00 is, without doubt, the king in used Impreza's!!

Ta for that, mines ( early 98 ) has had loads of upgrades so apart from the front splitter is pretty much the same as the later ones now - think I can live without the 'variable timing on the intermittent wash wipe' though ;0)

What about the map reading lights ............. I have to say that they are the most useful thing on the interior of my Impreza - and you ain't got them!!

Colin McRae didnt drive a bug eye.......nuff said!
If a classic is good enough for him it sure is good enough for me!!

Anyway bugeyes are ugly........there can't be any debate on that issue.

It's like the Ford Escort......the Mk 1 was revoulution, the Mk 2 was an evoulution and the Mk 3 was an abortion!!!!

SatNav is in the same category as Cocklinks ........... utterly pointless.

I can't understand the drivers these days - can't drive without a light telling you when to change gear (which is ADJUSTABLE!!??)

Can't get somewhere without a TomTom making them feel all big and important!

The 99-00MY got the re-programmable ECU, now that IS something worth having.

Keep an eye out for UK spec Euro imports, same basic car but go for a little less.

Pete, I look at the map before I set out, then go where I'm going. As dementia hasnt set in yet, I can generally remember where I'm heading.

Either that or I can use my wikkid blue neons in the footwell to illuminate the map ( joke)
