A personal tribute
I was fortunate to have met Richard before he became famous. He went to my school, though the first time I met him as a rally driver was in 1990. As a budding journalist he was the first person I ever interviewed. He was so down-to-earth, and was more than happy to spare me as much time as I wanted. But I also remember that one of his closest friends told me that day that he would be World Champion one day.
Later that year I was honoured to be asked to take his team photographs - again he had his feet firmly on the ground and showed great maturity for a 19 year old. A few years later I enjoyed a passenger ride with him at the rally school at Silverstone. Never have I been so fast in a Peugeot GTI, especially in dense fog! Since then I've watched his achievements from afar but I will always remember the natural talent that was nurtured from grass roots to WRC.
RIP

With the death of George Best, sadly Richards death will not be at the forfront of the media news.
His achievments / lifestyle / friendliness, will probably not get the time and space deserved.
My condolences to all efected by his passing, He will be sorely missed

Terrible news. I read the first few posts late last night when it was on here and the British Rally forum, but at the time it wasn't reported on any news channels. I went to bed in the hope that it was a sick joke. Unfortunately not.
Rest in peace, Richard. Or, failing that, have a blast around heaven's special stages with Michael Park.
Condolencies to Richard's close ones.

The first time I saw Richard driving was in Dyfnant forest in a Peugeot 309. From then on, I followed his career with interest, and I'd always hoped he would become World Champion - which he achieved in 2001.
I was truly shocked when I heard the news this morning of his death.

Terrible loss....Although George Best is the main story, him and Richard both were very talented young men at the peak of their careers. A sad last few days for British sports.
And my granddad who also passed away Thursday night.
All will be missed sorely,

Saw the start of the thread last when there was doubt and i'm sure all were willing it not to be true.
I saw the beginning of Grandstand today, and they opened with the news i'd hoped would just be pure rumour, they also had a little montage dedicated to him.
The rallying world has lost two of its son's this year, i hope these will be the last.
To Richard Burns RIP, and prehaps when he gets through those gates, he can team up with Michael Park, gents you'll be greatly missed.
