Exactly so; control is the key.

I can't think of anything especially positive about beating other people up. Bonding? Cameraderie? Nope, just some people like to fight. Nothing wrong with that, other than the fact that clearly some people (the ones in charge in this case) like to torment and bully), and their position means they can get away with it.

As for the fetishistic naked/St Trinan's/Doctor setting of the Marines film, one really has to wonder about the sexuality of some of the participants. I really don't give a **** whether they're gay, straight, or are into midgets, but still, it gives the lie to the <deep voice> we're soooo masculine </deep voice> stance taken by so many of the military.

Mr Pikey PSL, as you said you prefer to be known. I would not be so rude as to call you a chav.

You really are being particularly stupid and unpleasant. I am surprised that you have the brass neck to say what you have on this thread.

You have absolutely no idea of my character and therefore your insinuations of my sex and my predilections are not only grossly inaccurate but pretty offensive as well.

You also do not know anything about my long active service and you do not have any right therefore to run me down as far as that is concerned either.

You obviously feel somewhat inferior because you carp on about my job as a pilot being easy as you did in a previous thread. That sounds rich from someone who claims to be a nuclear scientist and yet was unable to explain to us the basic reasons for the existence of the Doppler effect, something most of us learned about during GCE 'O' levels.

Your general attitude and remarks about the military services in this thread are quite simply disgraceful and you should be ashamed to make them.

Personally I *try* to employ ex forces people. Why? Nothing to do with doing as they're told, but everything to do with the attitude that comes with the background. Self discipline, initiative, usually a high degree of motivation and a wish to get the job done to the best of their ability. There obviously are a few who aren't terribly bright and are only able to do as they are told. They will not be Special Forces, aircrew or technical specialists in any way. They'll be standard infantry or, more likely, guardsmen.

Having said that, the technical skills needed by even a basic infantryman are way beyond what the average member of the public has.

Get to a stage like the Royal Marines and other special forces and you're looking at people with far higher than average IQ, an extraordinary resilience and strength of character and a high level of self confidence, self discipline and initiative. Add a fuether technical skill (which almost all have) like aircrew, arctic survival etc and you have a truly formidable person.

Not just a fighting machine. Not justa brainless automaton. A person.

Now Pete, I'm not doubting that you have met a few dullards. Haven't we all. But to suggest that nobody who is ex forces is any better than that is purile, even by your standards.

As regards the incident in question, I have no doubt that it was isolated. It certainly isn't the sort of behaviour condoned - tacitly or implicitly - by the Corps, and it's not something I have encountered or even heard of in the 23 years I have worked alongside the Royal Marines, either with or without uniform. Horseplay that went too far? Probably. Unacceptable? Certainly. But taken out of context? Almost guaranteed. Read the report on http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4476454.stm and actually read the comments made by other current and former commandos. Look at the context that these steam letting exercises take place before getting all self righteous about it. Or, indeed, deciding that they must all be gay.

For the record, by the way, I knew one gay man in the service. He worked in intelligence and funnily enough now works at the same place Pete claims to work. Yes, really.

SB (Ex 3 Commando Air Brigade, Royal Marines and bloody proud of it)

Mr Pikey PSL, as you asked us to refer to you.

You have not understood or answered any of my reply or maybe its just that you cannot find an answer to it. How very NL of you.

Your remarks about paying thick Servicemen to do your fighting for you and that Servicemen in our military services are incapable of any kind of intelligent behaviour is execrable to say the least.

There was no need to run the British services down in such a cavalier manner since no one had attacked you in the first place. Your insults once someone does take you to task are grossly offensive and only serve to weaken what little attempt at an argument that you presented.

We can only assume that you were as usual trying to attract attention like a toddler in a tantrum but you should bear in mind that gratuitous language such as you employ does you no credit whatsoever.

He's probably moved on to winding up someone else now Les

No way is this tw@t in his 70's. He'd have more respect for the forces if he was.

Pete I usually find your posts funny but this time you have over stepped the mark.

I was in the Infantry for 5 years, I am now an R&D Supprt engineer for HP in Germany. I am also a qualified elctrician and network installation engineer.

I could go on but you should get the idea by now.

I was trained as a compony radio operater using HF and VHF radios, I needed to be able to calculate the length of the antenna needed based on the radio frequency, I had to be able to kit out a landrover with numerous bits of kit and cables, I had to be able to quickly code up messages using letters and numebr whilst in a combat situation. I had to learn to drive and maintain a snow cat, which included changing the tracks and also starting the thing when all the lubricants had frozen.

I was also trained in morse code and various other aspects of signalling.

I was also trained as a GPMG SF gunner and how to lay down supresive fire on a target I could not even see.

I was also a kayaking instructor and very competent at rock climbing aswell.

In my time in the infantry I was based in various countries.

I spent 4.5 months in the Falklands during the worst winter on record for 200 years.

I was involved in the 1st Gulf war.

I spent time in Bosnia.

We also spent 2 years in Northern Ireland getting shot at and blown up.

We also had one of our Sgts go screwy and shoot up the guard room, they stood the battalion to to go and hunt him down whith live ammunition.

Our barracks in Cyprus was condemed, we lived in a crap hole unlike the poofs in the RAF down the road that had a nice shiny new base at Akrotiri.

Yes there are a few and I mean a few ***** in the forces but as has been said you get them in all jobs and walks of life.

As that soft flyboy Cyprusscooby has already said! lets just hope we don't meet whilst on a rally or summat.

and just for your information there are a number of serving and ex-forces on here so I really would keep your opinions to yourself. Because not all soldiers and especially infantry soldiers are thick robots.
