can he not get a xmas job at least, places like debenhams, house of frazer and large stores etc are taking on loads of young staff part time at this time of year, and often keep them on after xmas... they are flexable with hours to fit around college/uni/families, you tell them when you are available to work and they fit your hours around that!

The National Minimum Wage has increased again in October 2005

The minimum wage is a legal right which covers almost all workers above compulsory school leaving age. There are different minimum wage rates for different groups of workers as follows:
The main rate for workers aged 22 and over. On 1 October 2005 this rate was raised to £5.05 an hour, from £4.85

The accredited training rate for workers aged 22 and over who are receiving accredited training in the first six months of a job with a new employer. On 1 October 2005 this rate of the minimum wage was raised to £4.25 an hour, from £4.10.

The development rate for 18-21 year olds. On 1 October 2005 rate of minimum wage was raised to £4.25 an hour, from £4.10.

The development rate for 16-17 years olds. This rate is £3.00 an hour.

Here you go Sara, sorry to hear the bad news.
Cheers
Colin

Its a shame. We are crying out for young appentice joiners with a bit of nouse in our area. Sadly, most young lads we come across are far more interested in earning more money at Tesco's stacking shelves than learning a trade.

Agreed, the money is crappy at first, (an easy days work in a warm supermarket earning more cash seems more appealing than grafting in the cold when you're 16 I suppose) but judging by the numbers of young lads coming into the trade (around 4 at Stockport College this year, covering an area of around 400 square miles), then in a few years there will be a serious lack of supply over demand. Come to think of it, there already is.

My advice for your lad is to ditch the 3 day course (I wouldn't employ a lad on this basis: I want him in the workshop grafting) and either go on NVQ day release at college (an employer would be happier with 4 days a week in the workshop), or CITB "on the job" training. Send him to knock on EVERY joiners shop door in the area asking for work. We would consider a lad on this basis alone, due to the fact that he has got off his **** and ASKED for work. (or go with him if you like: we have mums dragging their kids into work asking for work, so it's not unusual). Incentive with CITB is that the employer gets paid for providing training, and the lad works a 5 day week in the workshop in return. Disadvantage is that the lad doesn't get a "formal" qualification. But most of our apprentices in the past, following a proper appenticeship, have gone self employed and set up in business in competition with us anyway, so what good is a certificate then??

I'm afraid the likelyhood is that your son , being so impoverished as he is, is guilty of shoplifting form said garage. It's not pleasant for you to have to come to terms with but ask him. Will he deny it? - Will he ****!

On the subject of minimum wage, they do apply to under 18s but at a lower rate. The minimum wages for all the age ranges are clearly displayed in every branch of McDonalds on the enormous recruiting poster that they're bound to have.

And I think they can do what they like in the initial 3 month "Probationary Period"

my son doesnt need to steal from anywhere (its all camered up)

apparently he didnt work fast enough serving the 5 customers they have a day...at the end of the day he is now unemployed and looking for a new part time job so he can afford to go to college and get his joinery apprentiship.
he has gone out this morning and managed to get himself an interview at Wickes...its right behind his college and a couple of his classmates work there as well...looks promising

idealy i want him to work and train at the same time. i told him that if he gets the job at Wickes, to hang around anyone who buys wood in the shop incase they might give him a job

as for macdonalds!!! no way would i let him work in a ****e hole like that.......plus it doesnt took great on a CV......

the reason my son is doing the 3 year foundation course is because his skool was shut down to investigate the claims of child abuse involving some of the teachers there. the suspensions of the teachers involved happened during the exam period. it was a boarding skool for boys. there was mahoosive disruptions and the exams suffered as a result, and my sons much needed maths grade wasnt high enough to get him on the course he wanted.... anyway 2 teachers were charged for sexual abuse, my son was not involved BTW, thank god, but he was unable to re-sit his maths

my son will be reading all your comments and suggestions later today...thanks guys for some good points

he phoned work this morning and his boss said it wasnt working out, and now he has gone to see her.

he has had the job for 2 weeks and this morning i found out that he was only being paid £3.50 an hour...is this wage legal?

can he be given the sack without notice even if he worked part time?
he hasnt been late or anything

i am really angry because it took ages to find a job that fitted round his 3 days a week at college and his boss knew that is why he needed the money.

has he got any rights here?
no im afraid he has no rights... ..

I didn't say work there! o_O

Just that you can find out what the minimum wage for each age range is by looking at the poster, since that's all they pay.

Instead of hanging around anybody that gives wood, like his mum.

Hope he gets the job at Wickes, Sara. They were very obliging about hours for my lad, but he has had to give up a sunday and one evening a week to work, plus a few other hours for the H&S training, but paid time. He could have worked the saturday, but wanted to go and watch the Iron!

He says the work isn't hard, and can be interesting.
