Andy,
Did you ring the dealer in question or was your only communication done by e-mail?
I have come to the conclusion from past experience that timewasters generally use e-mail when enquiring about cars, asking daft questions etc and genuine buyers either pick up the phone and have a telephone conversaion or go and see the car in person.
Not trying to be rude to you Andy but you see my point. Dealers probably get hundreds of e-mails from people asking for a discount, arranging a part ex deal etc and must get a bit p1ssed off as the e-mails normally come to an end with no outcome.

Perhaps if you had of spoken to him he may have been able to tell from your conversation that you were a genuine buyer as this sort of thing cannot be picked up in an e-mail.

I emailed him from his website, as I can't make personal calls from work.

He replied in the evening (8-9pm), by email and leaving a telephone message.

The email was the £2500 for your car email. The phone message said he'd give me £2500 for my car and if I did the deal quickly I might get the S3.

Both came in late evening, so my response was by email. As his price for my car was low, I declined his offer and wished him luck with his sale. I sent an email, as I thought it was fair to let him know ASAP, so he could get on with other buyers and not take up his time. Did I do something wrong there?

I thought I was polite considering. The following communications were the ones that pissed me off, hence my rant!

I couldn't do that, but there should be enough information here, to find a red Audi S3 for the price of £9.5k!

Andy, i totally know how you feel...but it's worse in person, believe me! I had an experience with quite possibly the most arrogant car 'salesman' in the planet that made me feel rage like i've never felt before (possibly a mixture of shock, confusion and extreme anger lol). He lost 13.5k cash with one sentence and the fact he wouldn't push a button! To be honest, even thinking about it now makes me want to go up there and punch him....and that was about 4 years ago lol!

Not really, quite quiet and shy really....ok, how would you react

I had recently sold my sportsbike and sierra cossie + had savings as well. Total - 14k. Had no idea what car i was going to go for next so bought a £500 tatty pug 205gti to run about in til i decided. Knew of a garage not that far away that aways had a good selection of sports cars. Decided to take my dad with me as he wasn't doing anything else at the time. Got there and had a good look around - shortlisted about 4 cars. Two scoobs, 1 Alfa GTV V6 and an M3 convertible. Obviously before parting with that amount of cash (a hell of a lot to me at 19!!) i wanted to be totally sure so had to ask a couple of questions, look around, etc. I could tell the sleazy looking salesman thought i was at it but hey, who cares really, i knew my pockets were full

Talked to my dad and decided i was going to take the M3 convertible there and then, simple as that. Had a sit in it, looked around, shouted the sleaze over and said 'i'm really interested in this, before i go for it though could i see it with the hood up? (power hood...1 button!) to which he replied in an aggresive way 'are you just here to **** about with the toys all day cos if you are there's a toys r us a few miles away!!'

I said nothing....i had to just walk away (with no car...but 14k still in my pocket)

To this day it annoys me cos a) I really wanted that car
b) I'd never been as insulted in my life
and c) All this in front of my dad

How would you react Robbie?

So he's offered you "below trade" for a car with a dent in the side of it? Then at the end, he offers you the £3k you're looking for for a private sale? Pretty rare to get private sale price on a trade-in.

Carl, please re-read some of my comments above as I feel I'm repeating myself, in order to justify the actions of a salesman who obviously wanted to take the **** (with a price increase over the advertised price) but annoyed that I didn't take his offer!
