more metal where?
Wheels are substantially lighter on each corner, and the wings are pressed steel just a different shape.
There are no official tests of jap 22Bs, only the UKs which have a longer final drive and hence are slower to 60, but most 22Bs are not UK cars!
On top of that, repeatability and separation of .1 seconds to 60 are not what I call conclusive tests of speed. Stef managed 4.6 to 60 in a UK turbo with only a backbox change.
Officialy figures for uk turbo put it above 6 to 60.
On top of that, there is a big difference between 0-60 and 0-62 which most people overlook.

I had a modified and facelifted V4, which I think has the better engine.
But, In my opininion, the last cars of any model are always the best ones, so I would say without doubt that the V6 with the chin spoiler (£120 new from Subaru) and the slightly differeent rear spoiler is gonna be best.
The V5 and V6 shared the same engines and VF28 Turbo's and can be TEK3'd as well. V4's had the slightly inferior Vf24 and needed a link or other ECU.
Plus obviously the V6 will be a MY2000.
V-Limiteds had the higher fifth and quick ration racks, but the 5th gear is easily updated to match in non-V cars, buy using the 5th and synchro from UK box. You are looking at about £300 all in and might as well have the clutch uprated at the same time to save money later.

22B is less revvy, but has more torque than TypeR. I woudl really expect it to be quicker in reality.

Only thing I can think of is wide wings of 22B give it a worse drag coefficient, but I haven't seen it measured.

flat 4, type rs did not come standard with a quick rack. some have them, but they did not come standard, I can show you tens of them that do not have them.
second, there is far more to it than just wings.
third, no one mentioned price, someone simply said best type r!
fatmanscooby - fair play to you, not knocking your choice, type r would defo be my choice had I not found my car in the first place.

Well I've owned a sti5typeR and a uk 22b. Obviously the choice of which to have is the 22b all day long, NO QUESTION!
On a smooth road the 22b gripped better, may have something to do with a wider track. On a poor surface, the sti5typeR was pretty jittery to say the least, and it's even worse in a 22b.
Clutch wise, I understand there was a problem with the original clutch, but I had an AP racing twin plate clutch (fitted by subaru under warranty) which was fantastic in all conditions. Day to day driving was no worse than the P1 I also had, and in the 22b you could dump the clutch and no burning.
Point taken about why buy a 22b when you can have an stitypeR much cheaper. If I was to get another Impreza it would be an sti RA V Ltd.

According to the info i have..
wrx sti version 5 1270 kg
wrx type ra sti version 5 1240 kg
wrx type ra version 5 1210 kg
wrx type r sti version 5 1260 kg
wrx type r sti 22b 1270 kg
I was refering to the version 5 ra models being lighter than the type r models as the above info is from the jdm owners manual.
The certificate of registration from when my version 5 sti ra limited was imported states that the front axle weight is 740 kg and rear is 500 kg.
Which would make it 20kg lighter than the 2 door equivalent.

nope my V4 type r was running 1.1 bar standard and ive seen plenty of other bulk standard V4 type r's running the exact same boost levels. The performance in a V4 type r is no different whatsoever than a V5,V6 (standard cars im talking about) obviously my mildly modded V4 type R would kick a standard V5,V6 type r's *** all day long

load of pants this thread. I think everyone would love a 22B. its the only true iconic imprezza ever made (for all its faults), typeR / RA / P1 are all second raters in the pose stakes and if most people were being honest thats the main reason for having a scoob.

I think that is without all the extras that people put on the 'standard' RA vehicle.(Fully stripped out with no extra's, for cheap transformation to a rally car).
Aircon, sound proofing, electric windows, air bags, etc. All of which is standard on the R will soon hit 20KG!
BUT, I could be wrong, it was something I was told by some rally peeps. The same rules as the RS EVO and the 'Clubman' Cossie etc..
