Was there last night and managed to get some sneaky pics!!! The devestation is truely unreal....Some of the buildings close by are blown to bits....Its been said today it measured 2.8 on the rictor scale.... There are trees in the blast area that are literally shredded into small bits and up-rooted. If this had happened on a weekday during office hours many people would have been killed or badly hurt...

It's simply unbelieveable that many people have not been killed! Imagine if this had happened at 9.00 on a Monday morning? It doesn't bear thinking about.
We only sit on about 300 tons of Kerosene here and the safety measures that we employ are second to none, now we can see why.
I doubt they'll ever discover the cause due to the intense heat but I guess static on the loading bays must be a likely one. One faulty earth cable and it's bye bye.
Cheers
Simon

What makes you wonder is, what if something like this happened with a Gasometer in a built up area. I know there are still a few about in the Watford area. Im sure this has given terrorists a new idea ![Frown](images/smilies/frown.gif)
Thats if they are still used, im assuming it is as every time i see it its at a different height.

I heard the only reason teh fire brigade haven't started fighting it was because the environmentalists were not happy about them covering the site in 250,000 gallons of foam as this would seep into the natural water supply.
Someone should take these green morons and shoot them.
and BTW I am in Southern Germany and I didn't hear the explosion and can't see the smoke

Don't be a total idiot Pete. The firefighters do a valuable and first class job and we must all be grateful to them for the work they put in, I'm sure you've noticed yourself that the police are usually only too willing to allow them and the ambulance service to arrive first at any accident site for example.
I would say that they do something useful each and every day and that they deserve praise and to be well paid for it rather than snide remarks from the likes of yourself who has clearly never worked on a big job.
Even giving advice about smoke detectors is a more valuable contribution to society than most of us ever manage to make.

That'll mean we don't go into work again then. Was hoping I'd be able to rescue my laptop from my desk (building virtually undamaged) but I'll wait to see what happens when I get round to a house where there are full network connections!!

Think of the poor buggers in hossie just now and get a perspective, **** the price of SUL.
